  • Connectivity Challenges? Considering Military Movement Risks from 5G Networks (CCDCOE)
According to the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE), the emergence of new technologies such as 5G creates significant benefits and potential use cases for many industries. Due to the rapid development of civil technologies and the military’s dependency on civil solutions, e.g., for military movement, 5G will inevitably reach the military and affect day-to-day operations. Therefore, all relevant parties involved need to be ready to address both the opportunities and risks that will arise with 5G.

  • A Cause to Pause? Ukraine Conflict Assessments in Maps (July 4 – 8, 2022)
According to a recent update from the Institute for the Study of War, Luhansk Oblast Administration Head Serhiy Haidai stated that Russian forces are not conducting an operational pause as of July 8 and are continuing to shell settlements and deploy additional tank units to Donbas. Haidai’s statement likely reflects confusion about the meaning of the expression “operational pause” and how such a “pause” actually manifests on the ground in a war.

  • A New Rule Book? European Parliament Adopts Landmark Rules for Digital Services
According to Andreas Schwab (EPP, DE), rapporteur for the Digital Markets Act, “We no longer accept the "survival of the financially strongest". The purpose of the digital single market is that Europe gets the best companies and not just the biggest. This is why we need to focus on the legislation’s implementation. We need proper supervision to make sure that the regulatory dialogue works. It is only once we have a dialogue of equals that we will be able to get the respect the EU deserves; and this, we owe to our citizens and businesses”.
