Pride, pleasure and the pursuit of worldly dreams can cause us to leave what we know is true and right. In Jesus’ parable, a son proudly left his family behind. The son’s difficult journey back teaches us how to come home when we have run away.

Disciples making disciples will often be met with opposition. Since the first century, Christians have been targeted and tormented. Paul was constantly in the crosshairs of opposition, but he continually overcame and allowed obstacles to fuel greater commitment to advance the gospel in the world. [COMMISSION SUNDAY]

There is no pain like the pain of letting others down. Right after boldly declaring his undying faithfulness to Jesus, Peter blatantly denied him. But Jesus did not leave Peter to wallow in his guilt and pain. Jesus brought restoration. There is hope even when we disappoint those we love.

Sometimes we are dealt a difficult hand in life. Joseph was misunderstood and mistreated by those who should’ve taken care of him. Rather than being bitter and vindictive, Joseph chose to see God at work. When we want pity, maybe we can find purpose.

Even when we are connected to others, we can feel all alone. Elijah went from the mountaintop of success to the valley of despair, and he felt all alone. In that moment of loneliness, God showed up and renewed Elijah’s perspective and purpose.

After losing her husband and her two sons- and the status and security they provided in that culture--Naomi felt bitter and empty. But God was working in her life. Ultimately, Naomi’s life was described as renewed and sustained. From an empty life to a full life—how do we get there?

Job was put to the ultimate test. He lost virtually everything in one tragic moment. Would he also lose his faith? How do you bounce back after your world seems to collapse on top of you?

Your faithfulness to God comes down to a choice. Will you live to serve God or to serve someone or something else? Everyone serves someone. Joshua’s message to the Israelites reminds us that we can’t have it both ways. Who will you choose to serve this day?

In some of his final words to the Israelites, Joshua reminded them of God’s faithfulness, and encouraged them not to fall prey to the many “snares and traps” of the world. As we live for Christ, we too must watch out for the many ways Satan tries to attack.

When we give in to desire and try to keep things for ourselves that are meant to be devoted to God, those things become obstacles between us and God. Our sin has consequences for us and for others. We must be careful that devoted things do not become destructive things.
