In this episode, Samantha speaks with Jeannette Deutermann about her experience organizing parents at the local and state level to opt-out of standardized testing.

Jeanette is a public school parent of two boys ages 14 and 17 and co-author of “Opting Out: The Story of the Parents’ Grassroots Movement to Achieve Whole-Child Public Schools. Jeanette founded Long Island Opt Out and co-founded NYS Allies for Public Education, a grassroots coalition of over 50 education organizations which advocates for the elimination of high stakes testing, properly funding our public schools while fighting against privatization efforts, and for the concept of whole child teaching and learning to once again return to education. She has testified before the State Senate, State Assembly, and Governor Cuomo’s CC Task Force. Jeanette has been named on the Long Island Press top 50 “Power List” in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and has received “Woman of Distinction”, “Woman Trailblazer” award, and Bellmore/Merrick Central HS “Friend of Education” award, and named “Citizen of the Year” by Bellmore Herald and LI Press. She continues to work with numerous State Legislators, SED officials, Board of Regents members, rank and file educators, unions, and parents, to clear a path back to common sense education that meets the needs of all NYS children.

In this episode, Samantha speaks with Colleen Pawlicki about Local School Councils, which are a part of Chicago Public Schools.

Colleen Pawlicki is a Ph.D. candidate at Indiana University-Bloomington in Education Policy and Educational Leadership. While at IU, Colleen was the Associate Instructor for the Global Gateway for Teachers' Urban Program, a teacher preparation program for aspiring urban educators. She is a former high school teacher in Chicago Public Schools, where she taught English and created one of Chicago's largest student councils. She resides in Indianapolis with her husband.

Sarah Junk Hatcher serves as the Head of Programs and Education for the Indiana University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (formerly the Mathers Museum of World Cultures). Her academic background includes degrees in social studies education and history from the University of North Dakota and a M.S. in arts administration from the University of Oregon. In addition to her museum work, Sarah is currently a part-time doctoral student in curriculum and instruction at Indiana University. Her professional and research interests include project-based learning in both classroom and museum settings, social studies education and history, and material culture.

In this episode, Samantha speaks with Amara Stuehling. Dr. Stuehling is the Assistant Director for the Global Gateway for Teachers at Indiana University. Through the Global Gateway for Teachers, teacher education majors in the School of Education have the opportunity to student teach immersed in a new culture in a variety of locations, including Chicago, the Navajo Nation, and in 18 countries around the world. She completed her Ph.D. in Literacy, Culture, and Language Education at Indiana University, with research focusing on young children’s linguistic and cultural learning in a partial immersion Spanish preschool.

She joins me to talk about her experience being home educated at a young age compared to her husband's experience in public school. She also talks about why she did not become a school teacher and how schools of education can better prepare pre-service teachers as well as how they can shift focus to education beyond the school.
