What a ride it's been the last couple of years. From our humble beginnings in our little Queens studio all the way to entering competition at Sundance London, it's been an incredibly positive experience sharing our love of the New York electronic music underground with you.

And what better way to celebrate our centennial - to thank you, the lovers of this special music worldwide, our dedicated audience and partners in crime - than by sharing the sounds of one of our favorite artists, Lucidflow and Klartraum's Nadja Lind!

ER friend Jay Hill of Vive L'House snuck Ms. Lind into the country recently for her FIRST-EVER performance in New York. Nadja took a rapturous, (literally) glowing body-paint splashed crowd on a two-hour journey, grooving through a massive set of her own tracks and exclusive material in the basement of National Underground, with incredible support from DJ's Crybaby, Danielle Nicole, and Jay.

We were on hand to capture the festivities, and were also able to grab Nadja before her set for an interview and some espresso action, learning more about her background and influences, favorite production software, thoughts on sampling and pre-produced loops, and even the current state of play for female DJ's and producers in Europe. We couldn't ask for a better show for our one hundredth episode.

When it comes to describing Nadja Lind, a dispassionate third person box ticking exercise doesn’t really cut it. Sure, she has the credentials: a DJing career that kicked off on New Years Eve 2003 and has spawned a typically globetrotting calendar, a production career that has seen several works as either a solo artist or with Klartraum production partner Helmut Ebritsch, and the dizzying heights of being co-owner of the Lucidflow imprint with Helmut, a record label which has seriously started to rack up quality releases and remixes, seeing the likes of John Digweed and Hernan Cattaneo pluck from the catalogue, a seal of quality like no other. Mike Parker Bio:

Over the years, his education in the visual arts has had a profound impact on the music he produces. His production style is as uncompromising as his dj sets are powerful: a track is rehearsed many times, then recorded live on mostly analogue gear with no edits or overdubbing later. His dj sets have the same spontaneous bite. His main output has been on his own GEOPHONE label, on which he has released to date fourteen unrelenting, throbbing techno cuts, remixed (very rarely) by the likes of Donato Dozzy & Woody McBride. Mike's other releases include recordings for Orange Groove, Labrynth & Dozzy records. Recent releases include a remix of classic Aubrey for MOWAR and a track on SPECTRAL SOUND, also included on Ryan Elliot's recent "Document' compilation. Strong mixes for mnml ssg have further increased the devoted following to his tight & powerful DJ sets. Mike has previously toured Europe & Japan including the Labyrinth festival.

Truly one of the most productive people in electronic music scene even if you don’t know. You can find him behind the scenes since the mid 90’s as a producer, label owner, mastering-engineer and of course as a DJ. A vast number of productions, publications and releases are the result of 15 years studio and label experience.
Andreas is located somewhere between Tech-house, Minimal and Techno simply because he is killing all borders around. In his Dj-Sets he is summing up these genres in a very compatible and functional way.

Gregor Tresher, the famed German producer, veteran of Cocoon/Ovum/Drum Code, and Break New Soil label head, could not have planned his recent trip to NYC at a more apt time, as the volcanic growth in the local techno scene continues blasting into the new year. A giddy crowd awaited the Propaganda! crew at the Sullivan Room, and they were not disappointed as Gregor joined forces with ER friend Meandisco to drive incredible back-to-back sets into the minds and souls of the winter massive.

Not only do we have their sets in all their molten goodness, but we were also able to snag both Gregor and Meandisco for exclusive interviews! Subtlety is not the first word used in connection with most DJs, but there is much more the metier of Germany's Gregor Tresher than simply playing records, as Lights From The Inside attests. In fact, after he completed pre-production on his third full-length, Tresher actually stepped away from the decks for six weeks to clear his head. "DJing is my first profession," he admits. "It's what I love to do and what I have been doing for almost twenty years now, even before before I started to write my own music." In the past two years, the producer of 2008's best-selling Techno track on Beatport ("A Thousand Nights") has aspired to make music he would want to play out. "But for this record, I had the feeling that this shouldn't be my priority." While Lights From The Inside features several songs sure to find favor with Tresher's nightclub colleagues—"Frontline", "Breaking Routines," the giddy "As Days Go By" (recently issued as a single on Josh Wink's Ovum label)—this twelve-song odyssey operates on multiple levels.

Just as a painting or photograph appears to move if one stares at it long enough, with close listening the stratified grooves and melodies assembled on Lights From The Inside reveal an organic universe of shifting sound. Meticulous attention to the latter element—melody—was of utmost concern to the Frankfurt resident. Not obvious, eight-bar earworms that would quickly exhaust their welcome, but musical lines that could repeat and intertwine in different patterns, "melodies that are more subtle and develop as you're listening." In this regard, Lights From The Inside harks back to Tresher's earlier releases, even as his aesthetic continues to evolve in new directions.

Noah Pred Bio:

The entity known as Noah Pred arrived on Earth in 1979. Developing his skills through countless adventures between, this restless soul now finds himself based in the cultural nexus of modern Berlin.

Making the leap to Europe after five years fertilizing the extensive musical underground of Canada's multicultural metropolis, he comes deeply impacted by the unique influence of Toronto. Launching his Thoughtless imprint there over four years ago, the label is now well past its fiftieth release - Pred's acclaimed ERA ONE mix-CD - and has served to expose many potent talents from Canada and beyond.

Throwing the much-loved Thoughtless label parties was a natural evolution of numerous DJ residencies held by Pred in Vancouver, Montreal and in Toronto with the legendary Fukhouse crew. The past few years have seen Noah perform extensively throughout North America, delivering highly improvised sets that always strive to meet the moment head-on.

While past side projects have seen him working deep electro breaks and analog dub, contemporary strains of house and techno remain at the core of Pred's aesthetic. A versatile musician at heart (and a former bassist), his latest undercover experiments explore a futuristic interpretation of 2-step polyrhythms.

Recent releases on Cynosure, Highgrade and Trapez LTD have earned a renewed focus on his distinctive production style and extensive discography. With his False Image collaboration with Tom Clark out now Get Physical and a tireless approach that keeps him on the edge, 2013 looms large for Pred.

Mid-January frost? Subzero temperatures? Momentum, SRB, and Miss Kittin say no way, jose. The gentlemen of Momentum have kindly kept us warm all winter at Karma with their ongoing fete, the best midweek techno/house party in our fair city, Momentum/Rite of Wednesdays.

But why stop at Wednesday? Chris Schoedel, Matias Jofre, Stephen Eaves, and the House Cartel decided to kick up the flames a notch and burn some holes into our blue suede shoes with their new series of events at Brooklyn's SRB.

At what's rapidly becoming one of the go-to spots for underground techno in NYC, we were lucky enough to join the Momentum crew and catch the Parisian legend herself, Miss Kittin! Without further ado, adieu:

Caroline Hervé, aka Miss Kittin, has over the past years become one of the most inspiring DJs and voices to emerge within the electronic music scene. Alongside long-time production partner The Hacker, tracks such as 'Frank Sinatra' and '1982' propelled them into the spotlight, whilst further collaborations with fellow feline Felix Da Housecat's 'Silver Screen (Shower Scene)' and 'Madame Hollywood', Golden Boy's 'Rippin Kittin', Sven Väth 'Je T'aime', Steve Bug, Antonelli Electric and T.Raumschmiere to name but a few, have confirmed Miss Kittin's star billing status. She released her debut solo artist album 'I Com' in 2004, that showed her spreading her wings with jacking Chicago House, distorted punk attitude, skanked-up Dub and Electronic Pop as the singles 'Professional Distortion', 'Requiem For A Hit' and 'Happy Violentine' so aptly displayed.

The heavily-accented deadpan delivery over techno beats that established her notoriety on previous recordings has been unseated by a desire to sing, to scream, to rap and to croon, all of which she manages to do with ample helpings of sly wit and wordplay and a musical landscape that incorporates both brazen beats and intoxicating atmospherics.

Bio: 

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Oliver Caine found a passion for music at a very early age. Eventually picking up the bass guitar at age sixteen, and later on the drums, Oliver was soon playing in bands in the D.C. and Virginia area. It wasn't until 1999 that he fell in love with electronic music and never looked back. Within a few years he had purchased turntables and began to play out at various venue's in the D.C./VA area. After moving to South Beach in 2004 and gaining exposure to Miami's underground Dirty House and Tech scene, Oliver soon began spinning at numerous clubs and afterparties in Miami and D.C., perfecting his signature blend of dark, underground, House and Techno. Today, Oliver Caine resides in Virginia, is working on several production projects, and continues to perform across the United States and abroad.

Welcome back to the Underground Movement Show brought to you by ElectronicRhythm.com. As we move forward into the new year, we would like to highlight one of our favorite sets which was aired in 2012 by a veteran DJ / Producer Chris Fortier.

Chris took the Sullivan Room attendees on a Techno journey full of moody grooves, energetic rhythms, hidden twists and turns which kept everyone on the floor moving! We got up close and personal with Mr.Fortier in the pre-show interview to get a more in depth look at the man who travels the world to play in multiple countries as well as produces great tracks and has them remixed by world renown artists.


Chris Fortier Bio:

While many people may claim to know Chris’ sound, with their focus on labeling him one thing or another, Chris is equally as focused on his efforts to push back the musical boundaries. It is testament to the man that he continues to develop his sound and musical direction, after all, as the man says himself “I just like to play good underground music, I don’t limit myself. I am growing musically everyday, and the music I create and play reflects that”.

It is artists such as Chris Fortier who are inextricably linked to the underground dance music scene that are the genuinely pushing the sound forward. Chris’ determination to continue to push the envelope can be seen in all aspects of his career. Proof of this can be found on his now classic triple CD compilation Balance and his recent solo productions including his stellar debut artist album As Long As The Moment Exits.

The Balance 007 CD was a integral part of the now worldwide successful Balance series and brand. The album was a musical forecast of the fresh and exciting underground movement as we know it today. It is little wonder the CD was name checked for compilation of the year by numerous international magazines and websites. Taking his production a step further in 2007, his debut artist album was released to countless plaudits and impeccable praise. Followed by the remix version of the album saw Chris work along side the likes of Joel Mull, Ed Davenport, Mark Broom, Someone Else, Bruno Pronsato, Pheek and Maetrik.

Under his 40oz production guise Chris has released the several EPs and remixes that musically spreads comfortably across labels such as Bedrock, Wave Music, Cocoon, Kompakt or Get Physical. Recent remixes of Jim Rivers, Pfirter, Alexi Delano, Adultnapper, Derek Marin, Alland Byallo and John Selway, show Chris’ genre defying sound at it’s underground best. Not satisfied with status quo, Chris looks for the boundaries to continue to be pressed and pushed with each coming musical While many people may claim to know his sound, with their focus on continually labeling him one thing or another, it is artists such as Chris Fortier who are inextricably linked to the underground dance music scene that are the genuinely pushing the sound forward. Chris’s music production and DJing both critically and fan acclaimed success. His debut artist album “As Long as the Moment Exists”, and its remixed version the followed, saw the name Chris Fortier written in Techno’s little black book forever.

We hadn't had the opportunity to check out Stephan Bodzin live, and the man from Bremen made sure to make up for lost time. "Authenticity is everything - without it everything would appear to be nothing more than a hollow shell", says someone who has found himself at the center of the international techno scene since 2006. The passionate musician from Bremen has become a heavy influence for an awful lot of producers worldwide. As the son of an experimental musician his career in the music industry was set from an early age. And it was only a matter of time before Stephan would fall in love with electronic music. Composing music for several prestigious European theaters was the first successful platform for his music. At the same time he discovered his passion for club sounds and increased his efforts in this area. His mind-blowing talent was soon discovered and producers such as Oliver Huntemann, Thomas Schumacher and Marc Romboy queued up to work with Stephan. Due to the quality of his impressive music he has reached the top of the international techno scene.

Most recently he has remixed songs for well-known bands such as Depeche Mode, Booka Shade and The Knife. His releases can be found on labels such as Get Physical, Datapunk, Gigolo, Systematic and Giant Wheel. "Throughout my releases and all my collaborations I managed to let my ideas flow freely and to develop my own style" Stephan explains. "I understood that my personal definition of good and bad music is very dynamic and that’s why intuition is so important in this business". He describes himself as a "melody man" - "after all it's the melodies that endure". The responses to his productions seem to confirm this: his sounds are greatly loved in clubs worldwide. DJ Hell himself has dubbed Stephan's tunes as the ground breaking "Bremen sound". It was a logical move to create his own label called "Herzblut" in 2006. As part of the labelconglomerate Plantage 13 he has found the ideal creative framework for his works. His solos productions have done nothing but raise his worldwide profile even more and he now has the freedom of an individual artist with a worldwide audience. "This was a massive step forward", he explains, "I produce music to share it, and I can experience this great feeling in each of my gigs". Stephan's music is as polarizing as he is, both as DJ and live artist. But there's one statement that holds true for all of his productions: they are certainly of the highest 'authenticity'.

Loud Neighbor is a live techno projected created by STEEL5000 (USA) and Martín García Blaya (ARG). In 2005 STEEL5000 traveled to Madrid to study abroad for a year at the Fine Arts College in the University Complutense. Soon after her arrival she met Martín on the dancefloor in Madrid's legendary club, Coppelia 101. Martín had arrived to Spain from Buenos Aires 3 years before, working as a sound engineer in film and television. Together they begin to realize various video projects under the name W0RKT34M. In 2006, along with the guitarist Juan Proverbio they formed a techno-punk group, Isabel La Alcoholica. In 2007 STEEL5000 graduated from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and wins the Gelman Travel Fellowship. Hence in 2008 the couple moved to Argentina.

Shortly after settling into their new home, they give birth to Loud Neighbor, a project conceived as a self portrait in a neighborhood that was not ready for the noisy couple. During this time they debuted their live show in illegal parties and underground clubs in Buenos Aires, connecting well with the crowd and local artists. In the beginning of 2009 they got married and return to Spain. Back in Madrid they begin to record their first tracks under the wing of the Madrileño DJ and producer, Santi Xpansul, while showcasing their sound throughout Europe. In September 2010 they launched Loving The Alien, an electronic music interview series hosted by STEEL5000. The independent program grew worldwide, receiving a grand recognition from both the people and the industry. In October 2010, they began to release their music on True Type Tracks under the series W0RKT34M (TTWT) with the support of producers such as Joseph Capriati, Remute, Marcos In Dub, Tadeo and Alexander Kowalski. In 2011 Loud Neighbor returned to the Americas, playing throughout Argentina, Honduras, Guatemala and The United States.

Today Loud Neighbor continues to bother their neighbors while working on their new EP, The Fellonship, which will have a remix by the classic Detroit duo, Octave One, and be the first reference of W0RKT34M as an independent label.
