When you close your eyes and picture God, what do you see?

When you think about the divine, supreme, immortal, eternal, all powerful, self-existent God who the Bible calls spirit and who by nature is invisible, what do you imagine?

Until Jesus becomes not just a religious teacher, but the architect of the universe, the king of the cosmos, your very vision of the divine, Jesus stuff will be a nice idea or an interesting thought, but not the reason that you're alive.

Seeing, enjoying, savoring, worshiping, adoring Jesus as God is the Jesus stuff. An obsession with Jesus is the Jesus stuff.

You will never live a life surrendered to the Jesus stuff, which is the stuff that you were created for, is the stuff that you long for.

Perhaps the most asked question in Christian circles goes something like this -- What's God's will for my life?

Am I where I'm supposed to be? Am I dating who I'm supposed to be? Did I buy the right house? Did I buy the right car? Am I living in the right state? Am I going on the right missions trip? What is God's will for my life? And this becomes such a buzzing question in Christian circles that there starts to develop a level of almost unhealthy anxiety about missing God's will for my life.

So what's His will for your life?

Bear fruit, do good stuff, get to know God more.

Could it be that one of the things that keep churches from flourishing and thriving is that we've invented a form of Christianity without Christ? We've turned following Jesus into an event where we sing a lot of Jesus songs, but do very little of the Jesus stuff.

The life that you long for, are desperate for, is a life lived where you do the Jesus stuff.

I think there is potentially a reason your soul feels tired, and exhausted, and like it’s running on fumes and you’re not getting the results that you want from this thing called life…

You’re trying to run a race on a broken leg. You’re trying to run a race on a broken soul.

Lamenting is an art that we don’t often practice in Western culture. It’s really becoming a lost art in the Christian tradition. Rather than express our emotions, we just hide them, distract ourselves from feeling them, or pretend they don't exist.

A loss of lament has led to malformation in the body of Christ.

We’re taught to: smile, be happy, and cheer up. Which leads to a weak, fake, less than whole version of Christianity that feels thin and a soul that feels wounded and unsure of what to do. Are you tired of running with a limp?

Psalm 42:1-11

1 As a deer pants for flowing streams,

We are lonely, exhausted, hurried, rushed, frantic, stressed, anxious, sad, overworked, feeling under rewarded an empty soul.

The prescription from society is to treat yourself. How's that working for you?

Will getting all of this stuff actually take care of the emptiness that you feel on the inside?

It doesn't matter how good the books are, or the music is... Jesus gives this iconic teaching on discipleship in the soul -- if anyone would come after me and deny himself, take his cross and follow me, He will gain His life. For whoever would save his life, that man will lose it.

"21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord!This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul."
