TikTok trolls and a discussion about supporting folks getting harassed on the trail. This episode was meant to become what we've been up to, and planning the future but, became a discussion about Jim's challenges after posting a video about supporting people, specifically women, who are on the trail and having negative experiences. We dive deep into the topic of online sexism, the why's of it, and what Jim has done to support folks in the wilderness when things come up.

Ep 11
Interview with Kalman AKA Ghost Mule
This episode was almost too much fun. Today we have Kalman, AKA Ghost Mule, AKA The Everyday Hiker. We start out discussing why in the heck we go out and do these hard things, often, for fun, and what compels us to keep coming back even after injuries and bad experiences. We touch on using outdoor adventure to heal from trauma, how we move through the challenging moments that come up in all epic adventures, using learned instincts, and how to build the instincts that could save you one day. Stay til the end for some hilariously awesome animal encounter stories to finish this one out.

In today's episode, we're joined by Jim's often climbing and adventure partner, Brian, talking through the over-glorification of suffering, the art of sharing the good, bad and everything in between of our trips, type one, two, and three fun, stories from the trail, and when to know when to bail because you've got the "bad feeling".

Join us to discuss the recent changes coming to some wilderness areas around Leave No Trace (spoiler alert 💩) and we catch up on recent adventures including diving kelp forests, and the incredible Lost Coast Trail. Stay to the end where, inspired by all the epic coastal hiking, we recommend an absolutely inspiring northern California day hike trail complete with possible whale, seal, otter, pelican, elk, fox, or coyote sightings.

The wilderness, or simply nature generally, is part of so many of our mental health support routines. This is something we've touched on before and can even openly wax on poetically about. But what happens when your drive to do even the simplest outdoor, or indoor for that matter, tasks or activities disappears? When we experience dark moments, depressive episodes, and mental health battles, we can often pull away from the things that bring us joy and happiness, such as hitting a trail or exploring a new area, even those of us with podcasts and YoutTube channels dedicated to just that. Today we talk about depressive episodes, how we cope, what got us there, how we pull out as well as our honest experiences of just grinding through. We live in a culture that, too often, requires us to hide our struggles and we're making ourselves vulnerable because the struggle is part of life and it's important that we're honest about the best and also the hardest of times. We hope you enjoy this episode and if you're in a dark moment, know that you're not alone.

In today's episode, we dive a bit deeper into stories. Not just of challenges, trauma, and injuries, but also triumph over deep fear and the tools we used to get there. This one is all about emotional resilience, building tools, getting back to doing what you love after you get hurt doing it, and facing down lifelong anxieties.

We have our first guest! In today's episode, we got to sit down with Jori Schmalz, accomplished through hiker and avid outdoorswomen. We get to hear stories of the Appalachian and Wonderland trails, among others, how she got into through hiking and we even circle back to her experiences with gatekeeping (throwback to our Ep4!).
