    Laura's Story

"When I was about nine or ten years old, I decided I wanted to be a writer when I grew up.  And every writer needs a space in which to work, right?  So, I pushed a small desk into my tiny walk-in closet and called it my office.  I would sit for hours at this desk and write short stories complete with my own illustrations (because obviously every good book has pictures).

    ‍
Perhaps it should come as no surprise that here I am, about 30 years later, laying my heart out in print (sadly minus the crayon drawings).  Writing has always been an outlet for me and after a 16-year stint as a television sports anchor and reporter, I’ve gone back to my roots by sharing my own personal stories.
    ‍
I also realized once I hit 30 that I did not, in fact, have it all figured out.  That 10-year-old Laura who was writing stories in her closet probably thought that 20 years later she would be a full-fledged adult with a husband and a couple of kids.  Turns out, I was none of the above.
    ‍
And it scared the crap out of me.

But over the last (nearly) decade I’ve learned to accept that life isn’t always about what you expected.  And it’s the twists and turns along the way that actually make it a life worth living and sharing.  I met my husband when I was 35 (and a half), got married at 38 (and a half), and if kids are in our future, I’ll be at least 40.

    ‍
But this is my timeline, and I’m finally owning it.
    ‍
There is the life you thought you would have and there is your life, actually.  It’s the “actually” that holds all the power and excitement.  We just have to choose to embrace it.
    ‍
Whether you are exactly where you thought you would be or just trying to keep your head above water, my goal with The Life Actually Company is to simply tell it like it is.  By sharing my stories, advice and experiences I want you to realize you aren’t alone.  And happiness is yours to find and cultivate.
    ‍
So, let’s keep it real. After all, being an adult is hard enough.  Let’s lift each other up along the way.

This is a good time to also mention that in addition to having my husband, Marc, I’m also a proud dog mom to Oxford the labradoodle.  You will see a lot of him.  Sorry not sorry.  He’s adorable.  And we all live in California where we spend our time trying to be hipster enough to not get evicted."

  • Becoming a Victor of Your Circumstances with Laurie Foster of Foster Strategies Group

"So it's much more comfortable to have a cry fest at home, in your comfy clothes. When you can smear your mascara. It's another thing to be at a dealership and just walking in the restroom and leaning against the wall and gasping for your breath and just going 'I don't know' and then you're in heels and your makeup bag is in your desk...."

Laurie Foster understood early on in her career that the things most worth doing, were worth doing because they were hard.  As a female in the automotive industry, the odds were against her.  She was passed up for promotions, her voice was silenced in meetings, and there were many long stretches of time where she questioned her worth and purpose.

In this incredibly moving and heartfelt episode, Laurie shares the secrets she learned on how to stand on her own two feet, create the change she wanted to see in the world, and be a beacon of hope to women everywhere who are working in a non-traditional field.
