  • EW Wins Top Award in International Publication Competition
EW WINS TOP AWARD IN INTERNATIONAL TABPI COMPETITION
ELEVATOR WORLD took the top, Gold award in Trade Association Business Publications International's (TABPI) 2018 Tabbie Awards in the Regular Column category for a pair of On Camera submissions. Gold-winning entries were "3 World Trade Center Update" by Hanno van der Bijl and "Pilgrims' Passage" by Kaija Wilkinson. Described by TABPI judges as "visually compelling, and full of technical information for the readers," the columns covered vastly different, though equally impressive, feats of vertical-transportation engineering. Wilkinson's "Another World," which took readers along on a trip to KONE's underground elevator-testing laboratory just outside Helsinki, placed seventh in the Feature Article category. TABPI reports its 2018 Tabbie Awards featured nearly 400 entries from all over North America and the world, and that "judges worldwide were impressed by the high standard met by this year's entries." EW is very proud of the recognitions!

CONSTRUCTION IRKS RAIL PASSENGERS AT BUSY INDIAN STATION
Escalator parts and construction material stacked on the concourse at the busy Dadar rail station in India is leaving little room for passengers to walk and has prompted complaints from commuters worried about a situation similar to the deadly Elphinstone stampede in 2017, mid-day.com reports. To prevent such tragedies, Central Railway (CR) hired a contractor to build a two-way escalator between platforms 3 and 4 — the station’s most crowded — and a foot overbridge. Escalator parts are now taking up more than half the platform area, leaving roughly 2 m for thousands of people to walk. CR said the materials would be “removed immediately” and urged patience as work continues.
HIGH-RISE HOTEL BETWEEN PENN STATION AND TIMES SQUARE
Developer Sam Chang and Marriott International found a prime spot for their new 23-story, 89-room Comfort Inn hotel: between Penn Station and Times Square in New York City, New York YIMBY reports. Currently occupied by a vacant, four-story building, the 25-ft.-wide site at 337 West 36th Street will have a slender structure with a gray-stone and brick-masonry façade designed by Gene Kaufman Architects. The hotel will be outfitted with a cellar-level breakfast room, outdoor patio and 10th-floor terraces for some suites. The 23rd floor will have a penthouse that spans the width of the building.
