GAL NAMES CURZON VICE PRESIDENT OF MARKETING & SALES
John Curzon of Southampton, U.K., has been named vice president of Marketing & Sales for the Bronx, New York-based GAL Manufacturing Corp. group of companies, it recently announced. Curzon, who has more than 25 years of experience in the vertical-transportation industry, has provided what GAL called “innovative market-driven engineering solutions” to it over five years, a factor that led to his new position. The company said Curzon will have a key role in GAL’s growth by providing “strategic direction to [its] business development initiatives across North America.” GAL CEO Mark Boelhouwer welcomed Curzon, saying, “John was the obvious choice for us when we looked to fill this role,” citing his “marketing expertise and dedicated strategic perspective,” Curzon spent more than 20 years in senior management at Airdri Ltd., where he launched and served as President of the North American sales and logistics entity Formula Systems in Chicago. Since 2013, he has been CEO and Director of the Ensota group of companies (UK and Asia), a key supply partner to major elevator OEMs worldwide, including GAL and Hollister-Whitney Elevator Corp.
    UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS CREATE VERTICAL-GROWTH ALGORITHM
Researchers at the Universidade da Coruna in Spain created an algorithm that predicts the vertical growth of cities, dezeen reports. Using an urban area’s historic and economic data, the algorithm estimates the number and location of high-rise buildings to be constructed. Team leader Ivan Pazos explained the “evolutionary computation” blends Darwin’s natural-selection logic and basic rules of genetics. Used in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the computation involves “a multitude of possible to solutions to a problem that are randomly combined” to determine an end result. The team used a district in Tokyo as a test case and found projections to be roughly 80% correct.
RAIL STATIONS ACROSS NORTHEAST INDIA GETTING VT EQUIPMENT
More than 60 lifts and escalators have been or will be installed at stations across India’s Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone, which covers northeast India and parts of West Bengal and Bihar, Northeast Now reports. Focusing on stations with the greatest numbers of passengers, the vertical-transportation (VT) upgrades include, in phase one, seven lifts to be installed by September; in phase two, 12 lifts to be installed by October; and 24 additional lifts at other key stations later during the fiscal year. Each lift will operate around the clock and have a capacity of 11 passengers. By December, NFR plans to install two escalators each at an additional nine stations.
DOSH HOSTS VT SAFETY CAMPAIGN AT MALAYSIAN MALL
Malaysia’s Department of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) hosted a vertical-transportation (VT) safety-awareness campaign at AEON Mall in Kuching, Malaysia, on July 21, the Borneo Post reports. Emphasizing the importance of hiring competent, DOSH-recognized firms to perform maintenance on elevators and escalators, the event was run in collaboration with mall management and MS Elevator Engineering Sdn Bhd. A DOSH official also urged caution on the part of passengers and urged attendees to always monitor children.

  • Boy Injures Foot When Shoe Becomes Caught In Escalator
Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
    MISSISSAUGA CONDOMINIUM DEVELOPMENT FORGING AHEAD
The Daniels Corp.'s Wesley Tower at Daniels City Center, featuring 19- and 43-story condominium towers near the Mississauga Civic Centre in Mississauga, Canada, has made significant progress, with large portions of its underground parking levels completed, UrbanToronto.ca reports. The source observes this stage of construction typically takes considerably longer than podium and tower levels. Rafael + Bigauskas Architects designed the project, which will include a five-story podium with retail and amenities like a clubhouse on the podium rooftop, gym, children's play area and co-working space. Located at 260 City Centre Drive, the development will soon be home to hundreds of new residents.
JAPANESE RAILWAY HOLDS ESCALATOR SAFETY CAMPAIGN
Through August, East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) is holding an escalator safety campaign based on never-before-released data about escalator accidents, The Japan Times reports. JR East employees' efforts thus far have included handing out leaflets at Tokyo Station reminding passengers to hold handrails. The railway said it logged 180 escalator accidents in fiscal 2017. Prior to that, some accidents were fatal, including in 2008 when an intoxicated man fell from a unit in Tokyo and in 2009 when a woman choked to death as a result of her scarf getting caught in the machinery at a station in Ibaraki Prefecture. Most incidents were due to slips and falls or unsafe passenger behavior.
COMPANY IN NEW DELHI FINED FOR FAILING TO FIX ELEVATOR
An elevator company was fined the equivalent of US$363 for failing to fix an elevator in a residential building in New Delhi, India, The Hindu reports. New Delhi authorities said a man with a medical condition that made traversing stairs difficult requested the repairs. A company employee visited his residence "on the pretext of servicing" the lift, but then never reappeared. The company has been ordered to pay the compensation within 30 days for the "mental harassment and agony" it caused the man, who was forced to climb stairs to the third floor.
BOY INJURES FOOT WHEN SHOE BECOMES CAUGHT IN ESCALATOR
A nine-year-old Pennsylvania boy was hospitalized with injuries to his foot as a result of his rubber shoe becoming stuck in an escalator in a Chicago mall on July 21, Pittsburgh Action News 4 reports. Bystanders called 911 as his parents tended to his injuries. He was taken via ambulance to a hospital where he was treated for a fractured big toe and cuts. Expected to fully recover, the boy advised escalator passengers to “stick to the middle” of the steps to avoid getting their feet caught in the edge.
MIDTOWN MANHATTAN RESIDENTIAL TOWER TOPS OUT
The Summit, a 42-story, 556-ft.-tall residential tower at 222 East 44th Street in Midtown Manhattan, has topped out, and new renderings by Binyan Studios of the Handel Architects-designed structure have been released, New York YIMBY reports. The new renderings show the Chrysler Building in the background, and the BLDG development is only five blocks from Grand Central Station. The Summit will contain 429 apartments, including 109 that are “affordable,” and 7,160-sq.-ft. of ground-level retail. There will also be 231 onsite parking spaces and amenities including a fitness center, indoor swimming pool and shared outdoor terrace.

KIDS GET UP-CLOSE LOOK AT ELEVATOR INDUSTRY DURING MEI TOUR
Grade-schoolers who participated in a day camp hosted by Minnesota State University at Mankato, Minnesota, on July 18 got an up-close look at working in the elevator industry, thanks to a tour of local manufacturer Minnesota Elevator, Inc. (MEI), KEYC News 12 reports. Kids got to see how MEI employees weld, stamp, paint and assemble sheet metal to create custom elevators. Camp organizer Melissa Huppert said, “I think one of the important things we’re doing with this is helping expose kids to careers, industry and opportunities they wouldn’t get to see otherwise.”
