    THYSSENKRUPP ELEVATOR VR SHOWROOMS DEBUT
thyssenkrupp Elevator has launched a virtual-reality (VR) showroom concept that allows people to experience technology like the TWIN and MULTI elevator systems interactively through the use of VR headsets that provide a virtual "ride" in the elevator and a 360˚, up-close look at the way the systems work. Moreover, the company states, various options, such as cabin design, can be applied instantly. The concept attracted much attention at the Dubai Air Show earlier this year, and VR showrooms are now in place in the U.A.E., Jordan, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and Taiwan. thyssenkrupp said locations would be coming soon to countries throughout Europe, as well as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt.
INDONESIA’S FUTURE TALLEST BUILDING EYING 2020 COMPLETION
Construction on Indonesia's future tallest building, the 70-story, 333.5-m-tall Thamrin Nine Tower 1 in Jakarta, has reached the 32nd floor and is headed toward topping out in mid 2019, Kompas reports. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox for developer PT Putragaya Wahana, the building will house offices and a Waldorf Astoria hotel when it opens in 2020. It is within the 5.2-ha Thamrin Nine mixed-use development that also includes the 62-story, 274-m-tall Thamrin Nine Tower 2 with offices, residences and hotel rooms. Schindler provided the vertical-transportation package for the first tower.
    ELLIES AWARDS VOTING OPEN
More than 200 nominations were received for the first annual Ellies awards program. Voting is now open through August 31. During the period, each user (per Internet Protocol address) may vote for one company per category every 24 hr. Winners in each of the six categories will be announced in the December 2018 issue of EW and receive an official Ellies statuette, and a custom "Winner" logo to use for print and on websites/emails. As thanks for their efforts, voters can sign up to receive a free four-month digital subscription to ELEVATOR WORLD (by clicking on “Claim your subscription!”).
KIDS GET UP-CLOSE LOOK AT ELEVATOR INDUSTRY DURING MEI TOUR
Grade-schoolers who participated in a day camp hosted by Minnesota State University at Mankato, Minnesota, on July 18 got an up-close look at working in the elevator industry, thanks to a tour of local manufacturer Minnesota Elevator, Inc. (MEI), KEYC News 12 reports. Kids got to see how MEI employees weld, stamp, paint and assemble sheet metal to create custom elevators. Camp organizer Melissa Huppert said, “I think one of the important things we’re doing with this is helping expose kids to careers, industry and opportunities they wouldn’t get to see otherwise.”

  • Hines’ New HQ To Be Striking Addition To Houston Skyline
OTIS UK & IRELAND GETS SERVICE CONTRACT
Otis UK & Ireland recently won a three-year contract to service 32 elevators at hotels in Birmingham, Merseyside, Manchester and Preston (Lancashire) in the U.K. The contract covers hotels in the Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express brands. “The lift engineers will use the company’s proprietary apps and Service Customer Relationship Management System to access information about the lifts’ service history onsite and order spare parts instantly, with the aim of restoring lifts to service as soon as possible,” Otis commented. “The technology also allows the engineers to work with the Otis Customer Care Centre to prioritize the most urgent calls and quickly send the nearest engineer to the site.”

HINES’ NEW HQ TO BE STRIKING ADDITION TO HOUSTON SKYLINE
Developer Hines and architect Pelli Clarke Pelli, the team behind Salesforce Tower in San Francisco now have their eyes on downtown Houston, where a 47-story, 1-million-sq.-ft. "next-generation" office tower is planned, the Houston Chronicle reports. To take shape on the 800 block of Texas Avenue on a site formerly occupied by the Chronicle, the tower "captures many of our best practices from around the world," according to Hines Senior Managing Director John Mooz. Those include linear "sky atriums," plenty of natural light, ground-level restaurants and other amenities, outdoor space, and areas designed to encourage interaction. Hines will be moving its headquarters from the Galleria area to the new, yet-to-be-named tower, and a major law firm has also signed on. The building is set to open in late 2021.

PROJECT INCLUDING COLOMBIA’S FUTURE TALLEST PROGRESSES
Atrio, a two-tower scheme by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners that will include Colombia's tallest building, is rising in Bogotá, Caracol Radio reports. The project consists of a north, 46-story, 201.6-m-tall office building currently under construction and a south, 62-story, 268-m-tall mixed-use building yet to be built. Located at 26th Street and Caracas Avenue, the design features a 30-m-tall atrium; orange, diagonal axes that provide style and seismic support; and thousands of glass panels to protect against heat. A total built area of 250,000 m2 will include residences, hotel rooms and public space. The client company is named “Group a, QBO Constructores S.A.S.,” and the elevator engineer is Arup.

SRI LANKAN TOWERS DESIGNED BY GENSLER TO MAXIMIZE VIEWS
U.S.-based Gensler has designed Sapphire Residences, a pair of 140- and 224-m-tall towers connected by a skybridge with a triangular design that maximizes bay views in Colombo, Sri Lanka, dezeen reports. Set for completion in 2021, the development by ITC Hotels will have hotels in the shorter tower and 132 homes in the taller one. The 54-m-long skybridge between the 19th and 20th floors will have swimming pools, sun decks, bars and lounges. Interiors will be designed by London-based Philippe Starck, and most floors will have tall ceilings and 180˚ water views. There will also be a helipad atop the taller tower.

ADDITIONAL ESCALATORS LIFTS FOR BUSY INDIAN RAIL STATION
Vijayawada Railway Junction in the southeast Indian state of Andhra Pradesh is getting an additional set of escalators at its 10 platforms, as well as an unspecified number of lifts, Financial Express reports. With more than 150 trains passing through daily, it is Indian Railways’ (IR) third-busiest station, and upgrades that include a new foot overbridge between platforms one and 10, a new bus service and the aforementioned vertical-transportation equipment promise to ease passenger flow. The source notes IR is converting 90 of its stations into "world-class, airport-like" facilities with escalators, lifts, Wi-Fi, catering kiosks, new waiting rooms and stainless-steel benches.

  • Kuala Lumpur’s Future Could Include 145-Story Building
    THYSSENKRUPP’S MULTI RECEIVES ENERGY-EFFICIENCY AWARD
thyssenkrupp MULTI has been honored with the Alliance to Save Energy's 2018 “Stars of Energy Efficiency Award: Built Environment” for the ropeless, sideways-moving elevator system’s "gamechanging energy-efficiency possibilities." MULTI CEO Michael Cesarz plans to formally accept the award during a gala dinner on September 26 in Washington, D.C., where the alliance is based. thyssenkrupp observes MULTI can reduce a building’s peak power needs by as much as 60% compared to traditional systems. The technology can also regain, store and send energy back to the internal grid. The award follows numerous energy-efficiency accolades for thyssenkrupp.

KUALA LUMPUR’S FUTURE COULD INCLUDE 145-STORY BUILDING
If market conditions and demand are right, a 700-m-tall, roughly 145-story building will be built after 2030 in Kuala Lumpur's city center by KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd, EdgeProp reports. Quoting a real-estate consultant, the source said it will take up to 16 years for existing and incoming stock to be filled, based on current absorption rates of 1 million-1.5 million sq. ft. per year. Including a trio of office towers atop a retail podium on 4 acres, the proposed project would add up to 4 million sq. ft. of space to market. If built, it would dwarf the 630-m-tall Menara PNB 118 scheduled for completion in 2024 and Malaysia's current tallest, Petronas Towers.

TWO-TOWERED PLAN CALLED IMPROVEMENT FOR NYC AREA
Ascend Group's plan to build a pair of towers designed by Space 4 Architecture on either side of a former nursing home at 226-232 East Broadway on the Lower East Side of New York City (NYC) will improve an area marred by empty lots and unattractive apartment buildings, New York YIMBY reports. The 20- and 36-story towers would total approximately 240,000 sq. ft. and, according to the architect, "socially and proportionally integrate with the surrounding neighborhood fabric." Located along what the source described as a "seemingly forgotten stretch" of East Broadway, the development represents an expansion of the Lower East Side building boom that includes Essex Crossing and One Manhattan Square. Completion is tentatively expected in 2021.

CONDOMINIUM TOWER BREAKS GROUND IN NYC’S HUDSON SQUARE
Ground was broken earlier this month on a 30-story condominium tower designed by French architects Loci Anima and Sebastien Segers at 110 Charlton Street in New York City’s (NYC) Hudson Square, New York YIMBY reports. Replacing warehouses, Greenwich West will contain 170 residences, 2,800 sq. ft. of ground-level retail and a parking garage on the third and fourth floors. The development team includes Strategic Capital, Cape Advisors and Forum Absolute. Adamson Associates was the architect of record. Sales are being handled by Corcoran Sunshine Marketing Group, and artist Aaron Zulpo created illustrations to help market the property.
