UoN, CIBSE, LEIA COLLABORATE ON JOURNAL, CALL FOR PAPERS

The University of Northampton (UoN) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Lifts Group have joined with the Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA) on Transportation Systems in Buildings, an open-access, online journal for dissemination of research and innovations in lift and escalator technology. Drawing from papers presented at the annual Symposium on Lift & Escalator Technologies, the first issue was recently released. Through October, editors will accept submissions for the next issue, expected to be published in early 2018. Information about how to submit may be found here.

 

UNATTENDED TODDLER GETS HAND STUCK IN ESCALATOR IN CHINA

A two-year-old boy playing unattended on an escalator in a shopping mall in Tongren, China, fell and got his hand stuck between the unit’s rolling belt and stairs on April 30, the Daily Mail reports. Security footage shows the boy falling and being dragged down the escalator with his hand trapped. A woman rushed down to hit the emergency-stop button moments later. It took firefighters approximately 15 min. to free the child, who was transported by ambulance to a hospital. His injuries are unknown.

 

COLOMBO HIGH-RISE PROJECT NEARS FINISH LINE

Aviation Industry Corp. of China (AVIC) and subsidiary AVIC International Hotels Lanka Ltd. expect to unveil the AVIC Astoria project in Colombo, Sri Lanka, to the public before the end of the year, the Daily Mirror reports. AVIC Astoria will consist of four 142-m-tall, 39-story buildings with more than 600 apartments. AVIC used aluminum-formwork construction technology from China to build Astoria, which is said to boast impressive sea and city views regardless of apartment location.

NAESA REGIONAL OFFICERS ELECTED

NAESA International has elected regional officers. They are: Gerald Brown, Central Region; Bill Snyder, Eastern Region; and Mike Stewart, Western Region. Brown is a third-generation elevator constructor who serves as elevator inspection program manager for the Nebraska Department of Labor. An elevator consultant at VTE Solution in the Tampa, Florida, area, Snyder has been a member of NAESA for almost 30 years and has served on the Board of Directors since 2005. A board member since 2011 and current Western Region treasurer, Stewart has been in the elevator industry since 1999, when he started work with Otis. He became a certified inspector with NAESA in 2005, going on the help develop programs for the State of Colorado and, currently, the Denver Fire Department.

 

NEW FSSG MEETS NYC CODE REQUIREMENT

A new release of Rolls Elevator Safety's Fail Safe Safety Guard (FSSG), FSSG SDC v5, supports the New York City (NYC) requirement to separate the car gate switch from door-lock circuits, where the arrangement of single daisy chains exist (NYC Building Code 3.10.12, Appendix K3). The new version of the door-lock-monitoring device also incorporates all previous FSSG features: adaptability to all controller types and automatic safety gear/rope-gripping activation for any unintended car movement.

 

EDMONTON TOWER WOULD BE WESTERN CANADA’S TALLEST

The City Council in Edmonton, Canada, has approved rezoning of property in The Quarters next to the Shaw Conference Centre downtown to make way for a massive mixed-use development that would include an 80-story tower, the tallest in Western Canada, SkyRise Cities reports. Alldritt Land Corp. is the developer and KENNEDY is the architect of the structure, which would house a hotel, condominiums, retail and restaurants. The design pays tribute to the city's history, with a central core and elevator lobby clad in historic bricks. Demolition of existing structures is expected to commence shortly.

NYC BILL WOULD RAISE CONSTRUCTION WORKER REQUIREMENTS

New York City (NYC) lawmakers have been promising more stringent safety measures since 33 construction workers in the city were killed on the job in the last two years, NBC 4 New York reported. A bill that requires a better database of who gets hurt or killed in a fall was recently passed by the city council, but a more controversial one requiring safety training and an apprenticeship course for construction workers has not. That law would require a work visa and a general education degree and increase safety violation fines for companies to US$1 million.

MAN CRITICALLY INJURED IN ESCALATOR FALL IN TORONTO

A man believed to be in his 20s suffered critical injuries as a result of falling two stories, or approximately 10 m, from an escalator at the Maple Leaf Gardens building in downtown Toronto on April 29, various news outlets, including CBC News report. Paramedics responded to the location, part of which houses a supermarket, and police are trying to determine the cause. A witness said the man appeared to have been sitting on the escalator railing just prior to the incident.

27-STORY SOUTHSIDE CHICAGO TOWER CLOSER TO APPROVAL

A 27-story tower with 250 residential rental units, parking and ground-level retail moved a step closer to reality with approval from the Chicago Plan Commission, a “vital first step” toward full approval, Curbed Chicago reports. Should all necessary approvals be received, developer MAC Properties could break ground as early as this year. The building is envisioned on the current site of a parking lot at the corner of 53rd Street and Cornell Avenue in the Hyde Park neighborhood on the Southside. Boasting glass and tan-colored cladding, the design is by Chicago-based Cordwell Buenz.

“DESTINATION ORLANDO: 68TH NAEC CONVENTION & 2017 EXPO

The National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) will return to Orlando for its 68th Annual Convention & 2017 Exposition on September 11-14. To be held at the Orange County Convention Center, the second-largest convention facility in the U.S., the event averages more than 2,300 attendees and boasts more than 200 exhibitors, educational sessions, roundtable discussions and networking opportunities. FINAL MODULE FOR EUROPE’S TALLEST MODULAR TOWER

The final module has been lowered into place at the 29-story Apex House in the Wembley part of London, marking a milestone for what is now Europe's tallest modular structure, World Architecture News reports. The building consists of 629 modules and will serve as student housing. Apex House is the fourth Wembley modular project developed by Tide Construction and Vision Modular Systems and designed by HTA Design LLP. Tide CEO Christy Hayes observed modular construction is much faster than traditional methods, provides design flexibility and does not compromise quality. HTA tells ELEVATOR WORLD the building is being outfitted with three 13-passenger, 2-mps Orona lifts.

 

"SKYLINE-ALTERING” TOWER PROPOSED IN L.A.

A tower urbanize.LA describes as "skyline-altering" has been proposed for a parking lot at 925 South Figuera Street next to the newly renovated Hotel Figuera north of Staples Center and L.A. Live in Los Angeles. The rectangular, glassy design for the 975-ft.-tall, 66-story Figuera Centre is by architecture firm CallisonRTKL, and Regalian is the developer. Plans were submitted to the L.A. Planning Department earlier this year. If built, Figuera Centre would be the third tallest building in L.A. and include 200 condominiums, a 220-key hotel, 94,000 sq. ft. of commercial space, a 617-space parking garage and up to 10 restaurants.

KONE TO OUTFIT FINAL TWO MOSCOW CITY SKYSCRAPERS

KONE has been hired to provide the vertical transportation for Neva Towers, the final two towers for Moscow's international business center, Moscow City. Built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards, the mixed-use towers will stand 289 and 337 m tall, and be outfitted with 33 8-mps MiniSpace® and 18 MonoSpace® elevators linked to KONE's destination-control system. Designed by HOK, FXFOWLE and SPEECH of Russia, the structures will house approximately 4,000 people. Renaissance Development is behind the project, expected to be complete in 2020.

WOODS BAGOT-DESIGNED KODO RISING IN ADELAIDE

Ground was broken recently on the 30-story apartment tower Kodo at 29 Angas Street near Victoria Square in Adelaide, Australia, The Urban Developer reports. Designed by Woods Bagot, the structure is aiming for a late 2018 completion, and features a four-level podium containing parking and resident amenities. The developer is Flagship Property Holdings, which, along with the state government, is offering grants totaling up to AUS$38,000 (US$28,300) to first-time homeowners. Flagship observed that Kodo promises to become "an iconic feature on the Adelaide skyline."

KONE IN EIGHT SAUDI PROJECTS

KONE recently announced winning an order to supply 153 elevators in eight different projects commissioned by Alargan Projects in Saudi Arabia. The order was booked in the third quarter of 2016 and includes projects in Dammam, Yanbu, Riyadh and Al Jubail. Among them are Al Suhool Strip Mall, Al Rehab Strip Mall, Green Oasis Residential Buildings and Murooj apartments. Andrew Brosnan, portfolio manager at Alargan Projects, said the projects will lead to the development of many residential and commercial units in the Saudi Arabian market.

 

STRIKING NEW ADDITION FOR CHICAGO SKYLINE

Phase two of Optima Chicago Center, a 54-story mixed-use structure designed by David Hovey and developed by DeBartolo, topped out earlier this year, bringing a bold new addition to the Chicago skyline, SkyRise Cities reports. It will house hundreds of residents in a glassy, green building with a bright-red, landscaped podium and joins phase one, a completed blue-and-black tower next door. Optima Chicago Center is in the heart of downtown, close to the Magnificent Mile, and joins "a host of new highrises" in the city.

 

NEW KUALA LUMPUR LANDMARK IN THE WORKS

A quartet of mixed-use skyscrapers ranging from 62-92 stories is planned on the 15-acre site known as Plaza Rakyat in Kuala Lumpur, The Edge reports. The development team consists of Profit Consortium, Pavillion Treasures Land and Development and Gabungan Tiasa, all of Malaysia. Slated for completion in 2022, the development is set to include a new 1.35-million-sq.-ft. central business district, a 200,000-sq.-ft. upscale hotel, a 150,000-sq.ft. budget hotel and more than 3,800 serviced apartments. Pavillion Treasures' parent company Debao Property Development stated the structures "will become the next most significant landmark in Kuala Lumpur after the Petronas Twin Towers."

THYSSENKRUPP BRINGS HOLOLENS TO HOME MOBILITY

thyssenkrupp is now using mixed-reality device Microsoft HoloLens to enhance the experience of home-mobility customers in Germany, Holland and Spain. HoloLens makes it possible to visualize, configure and price a stairlift in real time, resulting in delivery times being reduced by up to 4X. This promises to be particularly useful as demand for such solutions rises, according to thyssenkrupp, which notes urban populations are growing rapidly, and improved healthcare is allowing people to live longer. With HoloLens, “customers can easily see on a tablet what the chair will look like on their staircase,” and choose fabrics and fixtures.

 

KONE INDIA OPENS NEW OFFICE

KONE has opened a larger office at Nagpur in India. Inaugurated by Amit Gossain, managing director, KONE India, the investment is intended to enhance the service level to existing customers base and prepare the company for approaching growth. "Maharashtra is a very important market for us, and this inauguration is in accordance with our strategy to boost our customer reach deeper and ensure a stronger customer connect in western India," Gossain commented.

ATLANTA BRAVES BALLPARK OUTFITTED WITH OTIS EQUIPMENT

SunTrust Park in Atlanta, new home of professional baseball team the Atlanta Braves, has been outfitted with United Technologies Corp. (UTC) equipment that includes 26 Otis units: 14 Gen2® elevators, one service and one freight elevator, and 10 NCE "green" escalators. Part of a package that includes climate control, security and fire protection, the Gen2 elevators use flat belts instead of ropes, which provide "a more comfortable ride, greater reliability, more efficient operation and increased energy efficiency" compared with roped elevators. Describing SunTrust Park as one of the most technologically advanced ballparks in the U.S., UTC states its equipment will make baseball fans "safer, more secure and comfortable."

 

WORKER HOSPITALIZED AFTER ELEVATOR SHAFT FALL IN SIMI VALLEY

An approximately 30-year-old male construction worker was hospitalized with critical injuries as a result of falling two stories down an elevator shaft in Simi Valley, California, on April 20, the Ventura County Star reports. Authorities are investigating the incident, which occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. at an under-construction, four-story building in the 4800 block of East Cochran Street.

 

BEIRUT TERRACES WITH OTIS ELEVATORS NOW COMPLETE

Beirut Terraces, a striking mixed-use building designed by Herzog & de Meuron that stands 119-m-tall in the heart of Beirut, Lebanon, is now complete, World Architecture Community reports. Otis provided the vertical transportation for the white structure, distinguished by its stratified layers, expansive landscaped terraces and individualized apartments, some of which are two stories in height. The building is also user and environmentally friendly, with elevators serving no more than two apartments and at a time, and two lobbies sharing features such as service elevators and fire escapes.

OTIS CHINA WINS MAJOR AIRPORT ORDER

Otis Elevator (China) Co. has been selected to supply 279 escalators and moving walks to what will be the world's largest satellite airport terminal being built at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, the main international airport for Shanghai. Once complete in 2019, it will increase the airport's annual handling capacity by 20 million, to 80 million passengers. The expansion covers 622,000 m2 and consists of two linked halls. Otis China President Perry Zheng described the company as an industry leader in the infrastructure segment in China, with equipment in many airports and public-transit systems.

 

THYSSENKRUPP RECEIVES TOP HONOR FOR MULTI

thyssenkrupp received the top Gold honor in the Transportation & Logistics category for MULTI at the2017 Edison Awards in New York City. The awards recognize excellence in new product and service development, design, marketing and innovation each year. Utilizing linear-motor technology, thyssenkrupp describes MULTI as "one of the most significant innovations in urban mobility that breaks the tradition of rope-driven elevators, opening the door to design possibilities in all directions." Award nominees were judged by a panel of more than 3,000 experts, and winners included notable breakthroughs such as edible six-pack rings (for consumption by animals).

 

KONE INKS DEAL WITH SRI LANKAN DISTRIBUTOR

KONE has entered into a distribution agreement with Scan Engineering (Pvt.) Ltd., based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, to provide elevators, escalators, maintenance and modernization services throughout Sri Lanka. Amit Gossain, managing director of KONE Elevator India, said growth of Sri Lanka's tourism industry makes him optimistic, as it will call for better infrastructure and spur the construction industry. Scan has been in business for approximately 10 years, and many of its technicians were trained in places like China, Malaysia and South Korea. HYUNDAI REPORTS MORE PROJECTS AROUND THE GLOBE

Following the release of details on the Saudi Arabian government’s large order for units in Security Forces Medical City, Hyundai Elevator has announced details of other large orders it has won since December 2016. Two are in Turkey: Erzurum Healthcare Complex, a medical complex in Erzurum owned by HEKTAS, for 50 elevators and six escalators, and Inanlar Terrace Lotus, an office/shopping-center tower in Istanbul owned by INANLAR, for eight elevators and four escalators. 219 Trung Kinh is an apartment/office tower in Hanoi, Vietnam, owned by Bac Ha, for which Hyundai will install 17 elevators. It will put 12 elevators in Surabaya, Indonesia’s VOZA Premium Office Tower; 15 gearless elevators in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s RD-477; and four elevators and 22 escalators in Bacolod, Philippines’ Bacolod Capitol Central Mall.

 

MAN INJURED IN MALL ESCALATOR MISHAP IN CHINA

A man injured his buttocks as a result of falling on a mall escalator in Fuyang, China, on April 9, The Star reports. The man’s backside apparently became caught between a downward-moving step and floor panel. It took responders a “considerable amount of effort” to free him, after which he was hospitalized with what are being described as serious injuries.
