SOUTH KOREAN TOWER CERTIFIED AS FIFTH-TALLEST
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has certified the Lotte World Tower in Seoul, South Korea, as the fifth-tallest building in the world, displacing New York City’s One World Trade Center for that spot in the rankings. The 555-m tower, which held its grand opening on April 3, is part of a development that includes a shopping mall and amusement park. The multiuse tower houses offices, retail space, a seven-star luxury hotel and an “officetel,” a popular South Korean amenity that offers studio-apartment-style accommodations with hotel services for people who work in the building. With its No. 5 ranking, Lotte World Tower has pushed Malaysia’s Petronas Twin Towers – once the world’s tallest buildings – off the top 10 list.

38-, 74-STORY TOWERS PLANNED IN DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN
Alloy Development and the state-run Educational Construction Fund aim to bring 38- and 74-story mixed-use towers, along with schools and amenities, to a triangular downtown Brooklyn, New York, site bound by Third, State and Schermerhorn streets and Flatbush Avenue, Curbed NY reports. The first phase of the 80 Flatbush project consists of the 38-story residential building and two schools, expected to be complete by 2022. The second phase would have the 74-story building with both market and below-market-rate apartments and offices. This phase is scheduled for completion in 2025. In all, there will be 900 residences.

GLASS ELEVATOR CENTRAL TO MALL’S REVITALIZATION
A West Texas shopping mall that has lost several large retailers is installing a glass elevator as part of a plan to remake itself and draw more customers, the El Paso Times reports. The elevator at Sunland Park Mall will have a glass front with glass mosaic and “opalescent” tiles on the sides, the Times says, and will be in an open atrium near two existing escalators. A bridge featuring glass railings will link the elevator with the mall’s upper level. In a statement, a spokesperson said the elevator will further the mall’s efforts to “continually invest in maintaining and updating the property.”

LONDON SEES RECORD RATE OF PLANNED HIGH RISES
The Financial Times reports a record 455 new tall buildings are planned or under construction in London. In 2016 alone, work began on nearly one tower per week, despite economic uncertainty over the Brexit vote to leave the European Union. Many of the new towers are planned outside the existing high-rise clusters, especially along the banks of the Thames and the eastern boroughs of Greenwich and Tower Hamlets. Not everyone is happy about the situation, however, and outspoken critics have forced at least one developer to abandon plans for a 72-story tower in favor of a 14-floor office building.

SERHA said steps would be taken to mitigate inconveniences caused by the work. The work is actually Phase Two of a modernization project. Phase One, which took place in 2014-2015, involved modernizing three elevators at Kingston Public Hospital.

    ELEVATOR FREEFALL IN INDIA
The leader of West Bengal, India's ruling Trinamool Congress and former cabinet minister Madan Mitra was injured in an "elevator crash" in north Kolkata on the evening of March 28, India Blooms reported. The incident occurred at Kolkata Metro Railway's office in the Shyambazar neighborhood. As he descended from the building's fifth floor in an elevator, it started malfunctioning, and, "minutes later. . . went [into] a freefall and plummeted to the ground floor." Emergency crews extracted Mitra nearly an hour later, when he was taken to a nearby hospital nearby in stable condition. A preliminary inquiry by police found that the elevator's cables suddenly detached due to a "technical error," which is suspected to have led to the freefall.

SINGAPORE AUTHORITY FIGHTS ELDERLY ESCALATOR ACCIDENTS
On March 28, Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) initiated a series of public-education activities to encourage the elderly to take elevators instead of escalators. The Straits Times reported that the intention is to reduce the risk of them getting hurt while using escalators at MRT stations. Among other initiatives, volunteers dispersed souvenirs to elderly commuters to remind them to use elevators, instead. They consisted of packs of tissues and an "ez-link" card holder with the message, "Seniors, Come Get A Lift, Make It A Safer Trip!" printed in all four national languages. MRT has seen a high rate of escalator incidents among seniors, noting that approximately 70% of escalator-related incidents in recent years have involved passengers above 60 years old.

    MÁLAGA HOTEL ENDORSED BUT CONTROVERSIAL
Suites Málaga Port was endorsed by the city council in September 2016, but, more recently, those opposing the proposed 443-ft.-tall tower in Málaga, Spain, have made their voices heard. Their complaints are its potential “unsustainability and visual and environmental impact,” according to G3 Newswire. The initial endorsement was only for the 35-story hotel, but a casino could also be part of the overall proposal. It is to have 352 rooms, 485 parking spaces, and a spa, shopping center, conference center and swimming pools. Euro Weekly News reported the “destination hotel” could create an estimated 1,300 construction jobs, with 350 additional jobs when it opens in 2020.

The Los Angeles City Council approved a Civic Center redevelopment plan that entails replacing the 1950s-era, Welton Becket-designed midrise headquarters of the L.A. Police Department with a 27-story, 450-ft. tall office building for city employees, Urbanize L.A. reports. Construction of this phase of the project is expected to take place between 2018 and 2020, and key elements of the Becket design, such as a mural and sculpture, will be preserved. More than 5,500 city employees working out of leased spaced will be consolidated within the tower's 1.2 million sq. ft. The entire plan involves new and reconfigured infrastructure, and will take place over 15 years.

Construction of a new north pedestrian bridge between the MGM Grand and New York New York resorts on the Las Vegas Strip that includes escalators is scheduled to start on April 3, ABC 13 Action News reports. Part of the Tropicana Escalator Project at the intersection of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard that includes 16 escalators, upgrades to elevator machine rooms and new pedestrian bridges, the work requires bridges to be partially or completely shut down through at least September. Otis is providing the units for the overall US$30-million project.

WMATA ESCALATOR REPLACEMENT IS A WRAP
A US$8-million project to replace five escalators that had been in service for more than 30 years at the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) Bethesda station is a wrap, Bethesda Patch reports, enhancing efficiency and safety for the nearly 11,000 passengers who use the station each weekday. KONE embarked on the project in October 2014, replacing the units one at a time and often working at night. The job included a trio of long escalators that descend approximately 10 stories from the street to the station’s mezzanine.
