After completing his electrical and engineering studies in India, Shankar worked for international companies in Bahrain, India and the U.A.E. PROPOSED TORONTO TOWER WOULD BE CANADA’S TALLEST
Cresford Developments has proposed a 98-story mixed-use tower designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) at Young and Gerrard streets in downtown Toronto that would be the tallest in Canada at 343.9 m, Urban Toronto reports. The project is called YSL Residences, but would also have office and retail space. The building has a sleek profile without balconies that indents slightly at the midway point. The project would be diagonally across from Canada's current tallest building, Aurora at College Park, and include preservation of a low-rise heritage building.
53-STORY CONVENTION CENTER HOTEL PROPOSED IN L.A.
TriCal Construction Inc. hopes to build a 53-story hotel across from the Los Angeles Convention Center's South Hall at 1300 S. Figueroa Street, the Los Angeles Times reports. TriCal would demolish a 12-year-old low-rise apartment building on the site to make way for the hotel, which would also have restaurants, meeting rooms, parking and other amenities. With more than 1,000 rooms, the structure would help address what experts say is a hotel-room shortage in L.A., which, as of September 2016, had 3,172 rooms with another 2,000 under construction. City officials have set an 8,000-room goal to help fill a void in what is "one of the top hotel markets in the country."

    CALIFORNIA ELEVATOR INSPECTIONS LAG
A FOX 2 News investigation found that elevator inspections across California and in San Francisco are lagging, with more than 10,000 of the state's approximately 150,000 elevators having "outstanding issues." The state, which is responsible for inspections, said by the end of 2016, 11,252 elevators (756 in San Francisco) had issues ranging from a broken light to a poorly maintained hoist rope. Inspection certificates were found to be anywhere from eight months to more than four years expired. Some building owners said they had current certificates, but had not yet posted them. The San Francisco Fire Department performed 836 elevator rescues in 2016, a 40% increase since 2010. Still, a state spokesman said he doesn't believe lagging inspections are a critical issue. California has a total of 70 inspectors, with eight in San Francisco and an additional three in training.

    JAPAN CONSIDERS EARTHQUAKE COUNTERMEASURES
The Yomiuri Shimbun recently reported that the Japan Meteorological Agency has adopted a plan to alert pertinent regions via a new emergency earthquake warning. The envisaged alert will be announced if long-period seismic vibrations occurring during a massive temblor are predicted to reach levels 3 or 4 of a four-level system. Additionally, the agency intends to use weather-information providers to inform building-management administrators about minor tremors that fall short of an emergency alert. Finally, new buildings at least 60 m tall must be designed “in a manner that precisely estimates the extent of long-period seismic vibrations that could be generated,” and a system by which to support quake-resistance assessments and reinforcement work on existing buildings will be initiated.
    WMATA TESTING AUDIO ESCALATOR-SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENTS
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is testing audio escalator announcements in an effort to increase passenger attention and decrease slip-and-fall accidents, WAMU at American University in Washington, D.C., reports. Reminders to watch one’s step, keep moving upon exiting and hold the handrail are being issued in male and female voices, starting at the 7th and F streets entrance at the Gallery Street-Chinatown station for six weeks. The program will then be tested at a handful of other stations. WMATA reports escalator slip-and-fall accidents increased 13% in 2016 and that most occurred as a result of passengers using inoperative escalators as stairs.
    NEW GLOBAL FORECAST

“SHOW-STOPPING” OFFICE TOWER RISING OUTSIDE PARIS
What is being described by anchor tenant Saint-Gobain as a “show-stopping” 39-story, 178-m-tall office tower, designed by Valode & Pistre Architects, is set to rise just west of the Paris city limits in the La Défense business district, SkyRise Cities reports. The glassy building will feature a boxy, transparent crown that will provide views into and out of a rooftop garden. Greenspace will be interspersed throughout the building, which, in addition to 48,600 m2 of office space, will have 400 m2 of retail. Developed by Italian insurance company Generali Group and Hines, the structure is scheduled for completion in 2019.
RESIDENTIAL TOWER WILL OFFER “EPIC” VIEWS IN MIDTOWN NYC
When residents move into Madison Square Park Tower later this year, they will enjoy what the property’s website describes as “epic 360˚ views” of New York City (NYC) landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building from what will be the tallest building in the Flatiron District at 65 stories and 777 ft., dezeen reports. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, which has several other projects underway in NYC, the building is located at 45 East 22nd Street and will be among the new breed of super-slender towers rising across the city. It contains 83 units with floor-to-ceiling windows.
ESCALATOR INSTALLATION DELAYED AT BUSY INDIAN STATION
Installation of escalators at Erode Junction in southern India is delayed, causing inconvenience for passengers who have difficulty walking approximately 100 m, then climbing stairs to reach platforms, The Hindu reports. Completion was originally anticipated in December 2016, but is now expected sometime in the spring. More than 100 trains cross the station’s four platforms, which are traversed by thousands of passengers each day.
