THYSSENKRUPP, PARTNERS SUPPLY NAIROBI HOTEL, MARKET
Joining forces with strategic distribution partners, thyssenkrupp supplied 35 units to the Greenhill Hotel and Village Market in Nairobi, Kenya, which thyssenkrupp describes as an up-and-coming market. The order consisted of 20 escalators and 15 elevators. Noting that Nairobi has been listed among the top 10 most dynamic cities in the world, thyssenkrupp said its collaboration partners managed the project, which “allowed us to provide cutting-edge technology and vital infrastructure to make a real difference, even though we have no field presence there.”
DETROIT TOWER INTENDED TO SIGNAL CITY’S REBIRTH
The City of Detroit's Downtown Development Authority has approved a plan to build a 52-story, 734-ft.-tall mixed-use tower designed by New York City's SHoP Architects and Detroit's Hamilton Anderson Associates that would be the tallest in the city and, ideally, signal Detroit's rebirth, Architect's Newspaper reports. Developed by Detroit's Bedrock on the former Woodward Avenue site of Hudson's department store, at one time the tallest department store in the world, the project would include residences, retail and parking built around what SHoP Principal William Sharples calls "a huge and inspiring new public space." If all goes as planned, groundbreaking will take place on December 1.

THYSSENKRUPP ATTENDS SUSTAINABILITY EVENT IN SPAIN
thyssenkrupp attended the 11th annual Cotec Europe Summit in Madrid in February, emphasizing its commitment to reducing waste and energy consumption through support of event host Cotec Foundation, a nonprofit with “a mission to promote innovation as a catalyst for economic and social development.” Chaired by King of Spain Felipe VI and attended by high-ranking officials from Spain, Italy and Portugal, the event was a chance for Cotec to share its first report addressing the circular economy theme. Javier Sesma, general manager of thyssenkrupp’s Innovation Center in Gijon, Spain, states energy-friendly products such as the company’s ACCEL and iwalk moving walks are “poised to change the way people will commute in cities.”
LABOR SECRETARY, MSHA: MINE ELEVATORS ARE “WORKING PLACES”
The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the Secretary of Labor contend mine elevators are "working places" as defined by federal regulations and subject to the same oversight as areas where work is performed, Aggregates Manager reports. The regulations state "a competent person designated by the operator shall examine each working place at least once each shift for conditions that may adversely affect safety or health" and that the operator must promptly take action if problems are found. Citations for failure to do this have been issued. Administrative Law Judges (ALJ) have denied the broadened "working places" definition, agreeing with the mining industry's contention that elevators are simply conveyances, rather than working spaces. ALJs advise mine operators to keep meticulous records to support potential challenges.

KONE INDIA LAUNCHES SMART ELEVATOR “HACKATHON”
KONE India, in partnership with IBM and HackerEarth, has launched an elevator “hackathon,” in which developers are invited to come up with digitally innovative ideas to, in this case, enhance the elevator-user experience. The hackathon is being powered by IBM Watson’s Internet of Things platform on IBM’s BlueMix cloud. More than 2,300 people from across India registered, and the top 60 shortlisted teams presented their ideas in Bengaluru and Chennai. On March 4, the top 15 teams are scheduled to demonstrate the integration of their prototypes at KONE’s R&D center in Chennai, with the winning team awarded a cash prize of US$5,961 and a chance to further developer its idea at KONE’s R&D center in Finland.
RESIDENTIAL TOWER SHIMMERS OVER BOSTON’S FENWAY PARK
Distinguishing features of the 30-story Pierce Boston residential tower, overlooking the city's Fenway Park baseball stadium, are starting to appear, SkyRise Cities reports. Arquitectonica is behind the slender, angular design, which features shimmery blue and metal elements. Samuels & Associates is the developer of the project, set to include approximately 350 units, along with a host of resident amenities and 20,000 sq. ft. of retail. Delivery is anticipated in 2018.
PLAN FOR TRIO OF TORONTO TOWERS ADVANCES
Lanterra Developments' scaled-back plan for a trio of towers in downtown Toronto between St. Patrick and Simcoe streets has, for the most part, won Planning Review Panel approval, UrbanToronto reports. Designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects, Artists' Alley now has a gross floor area (GFA) reduced by 21% to 66.959 m2. Building 1, the tallest, was reduced from 54 stories and 634 residential units to 39 stories and 393 residential units. Building 2 increased from 24 stories and 150 units to 36 stories and 310 units. Building 3 remained the same at 17 stories, but was reconfigured to house 210, rather than 345, residential units. The new plan includes a 1,000-m2 public park. While approving of the revised density, the Panel questioned the suitability of ground-level retail and configuration of some of the residential units.

SINGAPORE MOVES TO ADDRESS TECHNICIAN SHORTAGE
Singapore's Building and Construction Authority (BCA) is addressing the need to hire 1,000 new vertical-transportation technicians in the next three years by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with industry partners to support scholarships and sponsorships to attract new talent, Channel NewsAsia reports. More than 2,000 technicians currently maintain approximately 63,000 lifts and 6,000 escalators, according to BCA, but more are needed as the city-state's tall buildings continue to multiply. Challenges remain, however, including the fact that the vertical-transportation industry competes with higher-paying jobs in industries such as engineering, building services and transportation.
SEATTLE OFFICE TOWER WILL HAVE A PUBLIC-MINDED DESIGN
2+U, named for its location at Second Avenue and University Street in downtown Seattle, has a design that entails its 38 stories rising above an "outdoor urban village" with restaurant, entertainment and retail space, Commercial Property Executive reports. Skanska USA Commercial Development is poised to start construction on the project, which is close to the Pike Place Market and the Seattle Art Museum. Scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2019, it will aim for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification. Prospective tenants will get to take virtual-reality tours of the property with Microsoft HoloLens.
CALATRAVA DESIGN FOR LONDON’S GREENWICH PENINSULA
A design by Santiago Calatrava for a trio of 30-story towers has been unveiled for Greenwich Peninsula in London, Building Design reports. The towers will stand 30 stories and include a winter garden at 80 ft., a 500-ft.-long glass galleria and a land bridge to the Thames River. The US$1.2-billion project will also have a 340,000-sq.-ft. hotel and up to 300,000 sq. ft. of office space. The developer is Knight Dragon, which also plans to build close to 16,000 new homes in seven new neighborhoods. The towers, which have an appearance reminiscent of bridges, are expected to start taking shape by early 2018 and be complete in 2021.

THYSSENKRUPP WINS ITALY METRO STATION MAINTENANCE WORK
thyssenkrupp has been selected by Azienda Trasporti Milanesi and Azienda Napoletana Mobilita to maintain 585 units in metro stations in Milan and Naples, Italy, respectively. The multiyear contracts cover 237 elevators and 115 escalators in 60 Milan stations and 83 elevators, and 150 escalators are in more than 23 Naples stations. The latest contracts build on thyssenkrupp's existing relationship with Italian metro systems, including a recently awarded contract to supply, install and provide maintenance for mobility systems in metro Line C in Rome, the longest in Italy.
WOMAN DIES IN FALL FROM WTC TRANSIT HUB ESCALATOR
A 29-year-old New Jersey woman died on February 11 when she fell approximately 30 ft. from an escalator in the World Trade Center (WTC) transit hub, also known as the Oculus, in New York City (NYC), various news outlets, including CBS News, reported. Officials initially said the woman, who was traveling with her twin sister, leaned over the railing to retrieve a hat and fell over the side. Security footage later revealed she was lying prone on the handrail to imitate flying, New York Daily News said. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, the US$3.9-billion hub connects New Jersey’s PATH trains and NYC’s subways and is used by more than 300,000 passengers daily.
CHINESE GOVERNMENTS HOPE TO REDUCE ELEVATOR ACCIDENTS
In light of elevator fatalities across China, governments are taking steps to increase accountability, Global Times reports. In Northwest China, Baoji has begun offering liability insurance, and in East China, Qingdao has revised regulations to require that elevators in schools, hospitals, supermarkets and other public places be outfitted with surveillance cameras. The Qingdao regulations also stipulate maintenance entities set up 24-hr. hotlines and dispatch rescuers to scenes in a timely manner. National regulations already require elevators to be cleaned, lubricated, adjusted and checked every 15 days, but this is often ignored. Forty-one people died in elevator accidents in 2016, a drop from 48 such fatalities in 2015. Early this month, 43- and 44-year-old male relatives from Shenyang plunged down a shaft to their deaths from the 28th to third floors.
