FAÇADE INSTALLATION BEGINS AT THYSSENKRUPP TEST TOWER

A specially trained team of technicians from Taiyo Europe has begun installing the Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) glass façade at thyssenkrupp’s 246-m-tall test tower in Rottweil, Germany. The 17,000-m2 façade’s, or membrane’s PTFE glass is a highly complex material that is durable, strong and almost self-cleaning. The best-known brand name of PTFE is TeflonTM. With a gradual gradation that makes it appear opaque at the bottom and more transparent toward the top, the façade will shield the tower from solar radiation and reduce building movement created by wind. Heralding the tower’s December completion, the installation is considered to be the highest of its kind in the world.

MADRID SEMINAR TO FOCUS ON EUROPEAN STANDARDS

The European Federation for Elevator Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (EFESME) and Small Business Standards plan to host “Standardization for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs): Sectoral Representation at the EU Level” on September 22 in Madrid. The seminar will have two parts: a general one aimed at informing SMEs and national associations about European standardization systems and tools available to SMEs, and a second part focusing on the lift sector. Speakers from an array of government and business entities are scheduled. EFESME describes the event as “a very interesting opportunity to learn more about standardization at the European and Spanish levels with a focus on the elevator sector.” Registration is open through September 15.

TOWERS WOULD BE TALLEST IN FORT LAUDERDALE

Property Markets Group hopes to start construction in the second quarter of 2017 on redevelopment of the ailing Las Olas Riverfront retail and entertainment complex in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida, into The Riverfront, which would include 46- and 42-story apartment towers, the Sun Sentinel reports. Rising higher than the 455-ft.-tall Icon Las Olas and the proposed 493-ft.-tall 100 Las Olas, the structures would be the tallest in Fort Lauderdale at 499 and 469 ft. Containing approximately 1,200 apartments, as well as retail, The Riverfront would be developed in phases over up to eight years. City leaders expressed confidence in the plan being able to inject new life into Las Olas Riverfront, which was built in 1998 but has struggled with high vacancy in recent years.

SCHINDLER PROVIDING LIFTS FOR ONE OF SAN FRANCISCO’S TALLEST

The John Buck Co. has selected Schindler to supply and install 20 elevators, including 18 7000 high-rise Occupant Evacuation Operation (OEO) units equipped with PORT destination-dispatch technology, for the 43-story, 605-ft.-tall Park Tower at Transbay in San Francisco. Park Tower will be the first building to implement Schindler's OEO solution, which interfaces with the building's fire-protection system to facilitate faster evacuation. Upon completion, Park Tower will be among the tallest buildings in the city.

STRIKING RESIDENTIAL TOWER FOR DOWNTOWN VANCOUVER

Concord Pacific plans to start construction soon on The Arc, a 29-story, 88-m-tall residential tower in the Yaletown district of downtown Vancouver, Canada, SkyRise Cities reports. Its striking design by Vancouver's Kirkor Architects + Planners features twin towers connected by a three-story platform bridge containing amenities, the most notable of which is a glass-bottomed pool. Located at the foot of the Cambie Street Bridge, the building would contain approximately 590 residential units. Concord hopes its prime location near shopping and public transit will attract buyers.

PRIVATE ELEVATORS, “POOR DOORS” FOR SPIRE LONDON

Shanghai’s Greenland Group is forging ahead with sales of residential units in its 67-story, 235-m-tall Spire London near Canary Wharf, but not without controversy, The Guardian reports. Ninety-six of 861 units are to be “affordable,” but there will be so-called “poor doors” for residents who live in those units, as well as private elevators for those who live in the building’s ultra-expensive penthouses. Greenland says all residents will have access to Spire London’s third-floor amenities, which are to include game and meeting rooms.

IN MEMORIAM: ROBERT S. CAPORALE

Robert S. "Bob" Caporale passed away on the weekend of September 3. Best known in the industry as longtime editor of ELEVATOR WORLD, Caporale was an industry leader who hailed from the Bronx and began his lifelong career in New York City (NYC) in 1964 as a draftsman at the engineering firm of Jaros Baum & Bolles. There, he advanced to the position of associate and was the principal designer, field engineer and inspector on some of the world’s largest vertical-transportation and materials-handling projects, including the original World Trade Center in NYC and the Sears (now Willis) Tower in Chicago. In 1990, he joined DTM Elevator Consulting and Drafting Services, where he was director of engineering. In 1991, he joined Syska and Hennessy Engineers as vice president and director of the Transport System Group, where he continued to manage numerous elevator and escalator installation and modernization projects throughout the U.S. He began working for Elevator World, Inc. in 1993 as associate editor. He was appointed editor in 1997, a post he held until March 2014, when he retired and was given the honor of editor emeritus. Never one for idleness, he continued to work, operating his own firm RSC Consulting; serving as editor of the NAESA International newsletter Progress; joining the team of forensic analysts and technical experts at Unified Investigations and Sciences, Inc.; and working with magazine/online news source High Rise Facilities as part of its editorial staff. Caporale is survived by wife, Terri; sons, Anthony and Robert "Bobby"; and grandson; and a granddaughter. His family asked that, in lieu of flowers, cards or donations, he be remembered simply with love and laughter, which he considered to be the greatest gifts.

OTIS’ CHINA MOMENTUM CONTINUES

Otis continues to win significant work in China (ELENET 657 and 658), with recent orders to supply a total of 391 elevators to residential and cultural developments. For the Huahong Jiaxin Group, Otis Elevator (China) Co. Ltd. is supplying 208 Gen2® elevators to four high-end residential projects in the Yangtze River Delta. The system will be outfitted with energy-efficient ReGenTM drives. For Sunriver Holding Group Co., Ltd., Xizi Otis Elevator Co. Ltd. is providing 183 Otis Electric Gen2 elevators featuring composite steel-belt technology to a cultural center, pavilion and four residential projects in Anhui Province. Otis reports that thus far, Sunriver has nearly 1,000 Xizi Otis elevators installed in properties in eastern and central China.

KONE TO MODERNIZE STOCKHOLM METRO ESCALATORS

KONE has been selected to modernize and maintain 13 escalators within six stations of the Stockholm metro, strengthening an existing relationship with the Stockholm County Council. TransitMaster® escalators, which reduce energy consumption and oil use, will replace older units, and a real-time remote-monitoring system will be installed. Work is expected to start in April 2017 and be complete in mid 2018.
