HALF-MILLION MILESTONE FOR OTIS’ GEN2

Otis recently sold its 500,000th Gen2® elevator, which the company says speaks to the model's innovative design that features an energy-efficient drive, easy installation and flat belts (rather than traditional ropes) to minimize vibration. Gen2 has become one of Otis' best sellers in its 163-year history, with 250,000 units sold by 2012. It has been installed in more than 180 countries and territories. Manufactured in Gien, France, the 500,000th unit will be installed in a structure in Magdeburg, Germany.

KPF-DESIGNED HIGH RISES PLANNED IN EAST LONDON

A team is being assembled for One Crown Place in the Shoreditch area of East London, Building Design reports. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), One Crown Place consists of a cluster of buildings including 29- and 33-story towers that will contain approximately 13,000 m2 of office space and close to 250 residences. AlloyMtd of Malaysia is the developer, and those involved thus far include structural engineer AKT II Ltd., quantity supervisor AECOM and construction manager Mace, which built The Shard.

SFMTA EMBARKS ON VERTICAL-TRANSPORTATION OVERHAUL

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has embarked on the second phase of its Escalator Rehabilitation Project, which involves the replacement of 17 units, many of which date to the early 1970s. The agency also plans to begin its Elevator Rehabilitation Project in the spring of 2017, which will involve modernization of 11 elevators and the addition of new ones at the Powell and Castro stations. SFMTA observes the new escalators will enhance safety, save energy and be more user-friendly for both customers and technicians. Each unit will be out of service for approximately five months while replacement is underway.

KONE TO SUPPLY ENERGY-EFFICIENT SYDNEY OFFICE TOWER

KONE is supplying nine 7-mps MiniSpaceTM and eight 2.5-mps MonoSpace® elevators to 100 Mount Street in the North Sydney Central Business District. The 148.55-m-tall, 42-story commercial structure has 40,500 m2 of leasable space and was designed to the highest environmental standards. The project is a 5 Star National Australian Built Environment Rating System commercial building. DEXUS Property Group is the developer, and Architectus is the architect.

TOKYO PROJECT IS LATEST FROM SOM, MITSUI FUDOSAN

A 20,000-m2 mixed-use project featuring 180- and 200-m-tall towers in the Ohtemachi District of Tokyo is the latest from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and Mitsui Fudosan, bringing the number of square meters they have brought to the city to more than 2 million, ArchDaily reports. Convenient to public transportation, OH-1 is one of the largest revitalization projects in Tokyo's history and will include a hotel, offices, retail and cultural facilities adjacent to Imperial Palace East Gardens. It will serve as corporate headquarters for Mitsui & Co. and is described by SOM as a "world-class business center." Completion is anticipated in 2020.

UNIQUE ADDITION PLANNED FOR AUSTRALIA’S GOLD COAST

Surfers Paradise on Australia's Gold Coast is set to get an 89-story, 304-m-tall addition described by the Gold Coast city architect as "unique and attractive," The Urban Developer reports. Developed by Forise Holdings of China, The Spirit will house approximately 480 apartments, more than that of the architectural landmark Q1 (which, at 322 m, is still taller). The bottom three floors are to house a mix of retail and entertainment. The local council unanimously approved The Spirit, which is undulating yet slender, after being advised it will fit in perfectly with the Gold Coast's lofty skyline. DBI Design Pty. Ltd. is behind the architecture.

THYSSENKRUPP’S MAX GAINS TRACTION IN SPAIN

Customers in Spain, one of the pilot countries along with the U.S. and Germany for thyssenkrupp’s remote-monitoring system MAX report the system is already resulting in increased elevator uptime. According to thyssenkrupp, MAX, powered by the Microsoft Azure Internet of Things, can cut downtime in half for customers such as metros in Barcelona and Madrid, retail chain stores and banking institutions. thyssenkrupp’s plan is to have MAX in 180,000 elevators worldwide by the end of 2017, and for it to be compatible with 80% of elevators worldwide by 2018.

MIXED-USE COMPLEX FEATURING OFFICE TOWERS IN SHENZHEN

Chicago's Goettsch Partners and Hong Kong's Lead 8 have designed a five-building mixed-use development planned in the Qianhai District of Shenzhen, China, featuring a 62-story, 293-m-tall office tower, SkyRise Cities reports. It would be joined by a 37-story office tower, Hilton hotel and two apartment buildings providing more than 320,000 m2. Indicating the emergence of a new financial district in Shenzhen, the project also includes significant green space and 50,000 m2 of retail. Horoy Qianhai International Holdings Ltd. is the developer.

ECNY, INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS TO HOST CODE SEMINAR

Elevator Conference of New York (ECNY) and various industry professionals plan to host a seminar titled “What You Need to Know About the Retroactive Mandated Door Lock Circuit Monitoring Code” on October 19 at Bruno’s on the Boulevard, 88th Street and Astoria Boulevard, Jackson Heights, New York. The code becomes effective on January 1, 2020. Dinner starts at 5:30 followed by the seminar at 6:30. The cost is US$35 for ECNY members who register before October 13 and US$45 for those who register after, and US$60 for nonmembers who register before October 13 and US$75 for those who register after.

SIAM HITACHI TO EXPAND PRODUCTION, REACH

Siam Hitachi Elevator Co., headquartered in Bangkok and primarily serving Asia, plans to expand production and grow exports, The Nation reports. A joint venture with Siam Motors, Siam Hitachi is one of two overseas production facilities of Japan's Hitachi Elevator. It handles the Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos markets. The facility aims to increase production from 3,200-5,000 units and grow exports from 40-80% of its products by 2020 by adding up to two additional production lines. The Middle East and European low- to mid-rise markets would be a particular focus. Siam Hitachi also hopes to increase local suppliers from 65-80% in the next few years as it deals with a slack domestic market.

SOLID OUTLOOK FOR BRUGG LIFTING

Business is expected to remain strong for Brugg Lifting, with the Rome, Georgia-based elevator-rope manufacturer reporting it has picked up several significant new clients, the Rome News Tribune reports. Brugg Cables, also based in Rome and sharing a parent company with Brugg Lifting, closed recently, but Brugg Lifting Sales and Marketing Manager Mike Carr said that has nothing to do with his arm of the operation, which has 23 employees and produces approximately 1 million linear ft. of rope every month. Brugg Lifting serves OEMs and maintenance providers in North America and has few domestic competitors. That is part of the reason Carr said he sees "nothing but growth over the next two to three years."

HOTEL/APARTMENT TOWER PLANNED NEAR NYC’S HUDSON YARDS

The Hudson Yards area of New York City (NYC) continues to buzz with activity with CetraRuddy Architecture filing a permit on behalf of Chetrit Group for a 46-story, 622-ft.-tall hotel/apartment tower at 545 West 37th Street, near Hudson Yards and the Javits Center, New York YIMBY reports. The development would be roughly two-thirds commercial and one-third residential, with the hotel occupying 269,688 sq. ft. on the first 29 floors and approximately 130 apartments over 103,688 sq. ft. starting on the 32nd floor. Event spaces, restaurants, a gym and an underground parking garage are also planned.

BOTHWELL NAMED EHC GLOBAL VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES

Patrick R. Bothwell has been named vice president of sales for EHC Global. Based in Oshawa, Canada, he is responsible for managing key global accounts and relationships with distribution partners, as well as identifying and capitalizing on growth opportunities. Bothwell has been employed by EHC Global since 1997, previously serving as sales manager for the Asia-Pacific and director of EHC Japan, based in Yokohama, Japan. Fluent in Japanese, he helped guide international growth, including an expanded Japanese presence through a licensing agreement with Hitachi Cable and additional licensing and distribution agreements in South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and India.

NIPPON OTIS ACQUIRES SCHINDLER’S JAPAN SERVICE BUSINESS

Nippon Otis Elevator Co. has completed the acquisition of Schindler's elevator/escalator service business in Japan, which consisted of Schindler Elevator with approximately 380 employees and Mercury Ascensore Ltd. with approximately 220 employees. The new company, Otis Elevator Service Co., will be the exclusive, authorized OEM maintenance service provider of Schindler equipment in Japan with access to all OEM spares and parts. Schindler will remain in Japan to fulfill legal and societal obligations with respect to ongoing litigation.

MIXED-USE TOWER TOPPING OUT IN NYC’S FINANCIAL DISTRICT

A 23-story building containing 120 rental apartments and ground-floor retail within 128,540 sq. ft. is close to topping out in New York City’s (NYC) Financial District at 56 Fulton Street, New York YIMBY reports. Completion is expected in 2017. Approximately 20%, or 23, of the residences will be let through NYC’s affordable-housing lottery. The Parkland Group and Socius Development Group are the developers, and the architect is Goldstein, Hill & West.

STEMBRIDGE APPOINTED AVIRE TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

Michael Stembridge has taken over the role of Avire technical director from Karl Westhead, who has transitioned to fellow Halma company Apollo Fire Detectors. Stembridge will oversee product development for Avire globally. With 25 years' experience with major defense and communications companies such as Racal Acoustics Ltd. and Ultra Electronics, Stembridge holds a first-class honors degree in Electronic Engineering from Bolton University in the U.K.

US$3-MILLION ELEVATOR UPGRADE MULLED AT UMD

University of Maryland (UMD) officials are contemplating a US$3-million upgrade of the campus’ elevator system over the next three-five years in light of frequent service calls, The Diamondback reports. The College Park, Maryland, university received 500 elevator-service calls last year. So far this school year, it has received nearly 90. Work would focus on motors, controllers and safety equipment. Despite the complaints, university officials say the elevators are safe since they undergo monthly maintenance and are designed to stop when a malfunction occurs.

JAPANESE HOTELIER HAS EYE ON LONG ISLAND CITY

Japanese hotel operator Toyoko Inn Co. has applied to build its first U.S. hotel at 24-09 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City (LIC), New York, New York YIMBY reports. The structure would stand 50 stories and 514 ft., and house more than 1,250 rooms, as well as 260,000 sq. ft. of commercial space. Hotel Architect DPC of Chicago is the designer of the project, also set to include a parking garage. The site is currently vacant and is in close proximity to several significant residential towers taking shape in LIC.

SCHINDLER OPENS FOURTH TRAINING CENTER IN INDIA

Schindler India recently opened a new Technical Training Centre in Pune, India. Its fourth such center in India adds to existing facilities in Mumbai, Bangalore and Noida. It is equipped with three elevator shafts and electronic control simulators to engage trainees in actual installation in elevator shafts with real-life simulators. Schindler India Sr. Vice President — Technical Nimish Deshpande explained, "An elevator is not a plug-and-play kind of product . . .Just as important as the design and quality of the elevator. . . is that it is installed and serviced by trained experts."

TURKEY PLANS NEW CONSULATE/APARTMENTS IN NYC

The Turkish Consulate has filed applications to build a 35-story, 563-ft.-tall building at 821 First Avenue at 46th Street in New York City (NYC) containing approximately 102,000 sq. ft. of commercial space on the first 15 floors and 20 apartments for staff and visitors starting on the 20th floor, New York YIMBY reports. Located across from the United Nations headquarters, the structure, known as Turkevi Center, was designed by Perkins Eastman. Turkey intends to demolish its 12-story consulate built in 1958 at 46th and First streets.

NEEDLES IN ESCALATOR HANDRAILS REPORTED IN MOSCOW

A television station in Moscow is reporting on passengers being stuck by needles in escalator handrails in the Moscow Metro, prompting fears of “needle terrorism” like that which occurred several years ago in Europe involving syringes — some containing HIV-positive blood — being placed in the seats of cinemas or stuck into victims in public settings by an unidentified assailant, the Pravda Report states. Neither Moscow city officials nor police have confirmed the report. One man who reported being stuck was having his blood tested at a local hospital.

KONE ACQUIRES MAJORITY STAKE IN SPANISH COMPANY

KONE has acquired a majority stake in Citylift, S.A., a Spanish company providing elevator installation, maintenance and modernization. Citylift has more than 5,000 elevators in service and 111 employees in 25 locations across Spain. Pierre Liautaud, KONE executive vice president and area director for South Europe, Middle East and Africa, noted Citylift's "strong customer relationships and high quality services" will enable KONE to gain a stronger foothold in the Spanish residential lift market. Citylift will remain a separate brand.

HONG KONG ESCALATOR-BASED WALKWAY SYSTEM PLANNED

Plans for Braemar Hill Pedestrian Link in Hong Kong, which would include lifts, moving walks, elevated walks and escalators, are moving forward with completion of a preliminary design and engineering impact study by the Highways Department, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports. If all goes well, it could open as soon as 2020. The system would enhance access to homes and schools on Braemar Hill and is estimated to attract approximately 14,000 pedestrians per day. Residents are expected to welcome the move, as it will both improve access and drive up home prices.

LUXURY RESIDENTIAL TOWER FOR NEWARK

The first new residential project for Newark, New Jersey, in decades is taking shape in the form of One Theater Square, a 22-story brick-and-glass tower that will house 245 luxury residences, ground-level retail and 285 parking spaces overlooking the waterfront, developer Dranoff Properties reports. Part of the city’s resurgence, the tower is located across from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the new Prudential headquarters and a Whole Foods Market. Construction is set to begin in the fall.

NYC MIXED-USE TOWERS HAVE UNIQUE DESIGN

A pair of 25- and 35-story-tall mixed-use towers is taking shape at 76 Eleventh Avenue in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City (NYC), New York YIMBY reports. Linked by a four-story base and standing 302 and 402 ft. tall, respectively, the structures have a twisting, almost Siamese-twin look created by design architect Bjarke Ingels Group and executive architect Woods Bagot. The development is set to include 310 residential units and 181,893 sq. ft. of commercial space. HFZ Capital Group is the developer, and the project is scheduled for completion in 2019.

UAA FACING ELEVATOR-INSPECTION BACKLOG

The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is facing an elevator-inspection backlog, with 20 of the 51 elevators on its main campus overdue for inspection, some by more than two years, The Northern Light reports. Required once every two years and taking anywhere from 1 hr. to half a day, inspections at UAA are handled by the Municipality of Anchorage, which recently increased its number of inspectors from two to three. UAA officials say they are confident in the elevators’ safety, since they undergo monthly maintenance under a contract with an OEM, and that the 20 units overdue for inspection will be inspected by July 2017.
