NYC REVIEWING CHRYSLER BUILDING OBSERVATION DECK PLANS

The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission is reviewing plans to build a new observation deck on the upper floors of the iconic Chrysler Building, New York YIMBY reports. Aby Rosen, cofounder of RFR Holding and part-owner of the building, has said the new deck is just part of plans to reinvigorate the landmark. Other phases would include new restaurants, a food hall and retail spaces. The deck, designed by Gensler, would be built on the 61st floor, where terraces currently exist on the north and south sides of the building. Modifications include the replacement of doors with new, power-operated entryways with wider frames to accommodate wheelchairs. A wall of 13 glass panels spanning 51 ft. and standing 7 ft. tall, would be placed at the edge of the terraces. Double-hung windows on the 61st and 62nd floors would be replaced with hinged windows, but the existing exterior trim would not be altered.

- The European Federation for Elevator Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises has published “Basic General Information Note to Work Safely,” a compendium of good practices for safe behavior while working. The guidelines are based on several national protocols and include important information about mask usage, handwashing and more.

- The Elevator & Escalator Division of Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc., headquartered in Cypress, California, and the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation donated US$12,000 to Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization.

- The Illinois Hotel and Lodging Industry has established COVID-19 guidelines, including routinely sanitizing frequently touched surfaces such as elevator buttons, WIFR Channel 23 reports.

- Dubai Metro elevators are now limited to two passengers each, according to The National.

- The National Elevator Industry, Inc. invites industry members to take an anonymous 2-min survey related to the impact of the coronavirus as states and cities look to reopen. It has also updated its executive order/policy directive spreadsheet, this week featuring highlights from numerous jurisdictions that have issued reopening plans and associated guidance. The association encourages readers to visit its Coronavirus Resource page for other updates.

- In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, KONE is introducing a range of solutions designed to make buildings and cities safer and healthier. As facilities begin to reopen, the challenge involves maintaining social distancing while people move in shared spaces. The KONE People Flow Planning and Consulting service supports a safe return to offices and other buildings. Other solutions in the works improve air quality in elevators, help disinfect escalator handrails and reduce the need to touch surfaces.

- Representatives of the big OEMs around the world continue to share news about their corporate social responsibility efforts. Among two recent efforts reported on LinkedIn were thyssenkrupp Elevadores donating 5,000 surgical masks to the emergency department in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and KONE supporting two Belgian organizations, Paviljoen-Schaarbeek and DigitalForYouth.be, which have the goal of getting “every student online to ensure continued education.”

- Sean Madden, president and CEO of Louisville, Kentucky-based Madden Elevator Co., is clearing a day each week for virtual meetings to support family, friends, customers, prospects and colleagues. For more information, contact via phone and email.

- Industry City, a 34-acre, 16-building complex in Brooklyn, New York, collaborated with Champion Elevator to design a touchless elevator call option adjacent to the existing hall-call buttons, Industry City Executive Director of Property Management Joseph Szabo said on LinkedIn. Tenants will be able to use their security access cards within the cab to access their floors, and preregistered visitors can use their cell phones.
