This week on the podcast with Elk Hunting fresh on my mind we deep dive into elk hunting with my good buddy Tony Trietch. Tony has built his life around being able to hunt pretty much all fall without going home and this gives him a ton of days to be chasing elk. The Last couple years Nevada and Colorado have been his go-to and in this episode we dive into some of those adventures. We also layout some tactical advise and lessons learned. Tony is admittedly not a caller, and as a recovering mule deer guy focuses on spot and stalk type hunting. We breakdown tony's system and what his day to day looks like in order to be successful year in and year out.
On this week's episode of Elk Hunt, I sit down with seasoned elk hunter and frequent show guest, Zach Bowhay. We get to hear the nostalgic tale of how his daughter recently took down a rifle elk bull, eerily mirroring a hunt Zach experienced with his dad at 18. With vast experience in both rifle and bow hunting, Zach offers up some invaluable advice for pursuing late-season bulls. If you've ever wondered how elk behavior shifts post-September, this episode is a must-listen. From Zach's intriguing strategy of possibly skipping the morning hunt, to his insights on terrain selection, and why he isn't on the lookout for massive elk herds, there's a trove of knowledge to unearth. Tune in and elevate your elk hunting game!
This week I wanted to do another solo podcast of a framework I was thinking about while out scouting. I have done a couple of great podcasts with Patreon members and it got me thinking about this concept of Changing the Baseline, or expanding the horizon. What would change if you could just hunt with me for a day. For many of you probably nothing but for others it may open your eyes to what it looks like to operate at the next level.
Hey, folks! Cody Rich here, and if you've got a passion for elk hunting, you're in for a treat. This week, I'm sitting down with Cliff Gray, not only an experienced elk hunter but also a former outfitter with wisdom that runs deep.
Lately, Cliff's been dishing out daily elk hunting tips as the season approaches, and let me tell you — these aren’t your everyday pointers. Especially for those familiar with the challenges of OTC areas, Cliff's expertise on navigating pressured elk is gold. In today’s chat, we really dive deep into strategies for hunting those elusive bulls — especially the silent types. It’s all about unconventional tactics and rethinking the game plan.
If you're looking to think outside the box and up your elk game, this episode is your blueprint. And for all you digital trackers out there, Cliff’s YouTube channel is a treasure trove of insights, so don’t miss out. Strap in and let’s unravel the secrets of successful elk hunting! 🏹🌲🦌🎙️
One of the best podcast we ever did, or least one of the more popular was a podcast about how to be in the 10% of elk hunters that kill 90% of elk with Zach Bowhay. To this day that episode is still growing in downloads! Zach has been on multiple times but this week was one of my favorite episodes we have ever recorded with Zach. Last fall Zach had one of the best elk hunting tags in the country. Now before any of you think he is some big bull snob, Zach is a Idaho OTC hunter as they come but when you get blessed with yet another (3) Utah premium tags you might want to not shoot the first 6 point that walks by. Zach went into this hunt wanting to hold out for a great bull but I don't think he could have ever imagined what would happen on this hunt. What an incredible story!
This podcast is a bit different, so let me know what you think. Today I want to talk about the 5 types of luck and how you can improve your chance at luck in the elk woods. These are based on a book written in 1978 by Dr. James H. Austin wrote Chase, Chance, and Creativity: The Lucky Art of Novelty. It was later brought to the entrepreneur world by Marc Andressen on his blog where he talks The Four Types Kinds of Luck I thought this was applicable and I was so bold as to add a 5 type. 1) Blind Luck 2) Luck in Motion 3) Luck in Preparation 4) Luck Finding You 5) Luck in Consistency I also added a story about the Sleeping 322" bull I killed a couple years ago, and how multiple types of luck came into play in me killing that bull. ... you know, I'd rather be lucky than good.
This week Jaden and I catch up on season after I missed a bull day 3 but managed to pull it together on day 8 on a different bull. We chat about the season, how active the rut is and drop some tips for those still in the game. We also talk about Jaden's hunt so far as he found himself a good bull and has been trying to get close. I give Jaden a bunch of crap about how he should have just ran at the bull when he was raking but Jaden wasn't sure, aka wasn't aggressive enough. A lot of open country tactics and treating stalks like Jaden his going after a mule deer. Great podcast with some good hunting story mixed with some tips on how to get it done. Cheers! I'M ON THE BOARD!!!!

This episode actually comes as a guest on another podcast. Mindful Hunter ep 135 but the conversation was so good I wanted to share it with you guys as well. Jay has become a good friend and is incredible smart as well as thoughtful about everything he does. Shout out to Mindful Hunter and everyone go give his podcast a listen. Recently Jay killed another good bull on a tough hunt. After some text messages Jay told me I just want to be the hunter that is consistent. I laughed and said around here we call that 201. This lead to a conversation about how to be a consistent elk killer. This podcast is one of the best conversations I have had recently and there are so many nuggets that I wish I knew 20 years ago. Hope you guys enjoy!
p.s. If you sign up for the course right now through the end of October you will be entered to win our October Sweepstakes. We are giving away a Weatherby Backcountry 2.0 in 338 WBY RPM topped with a Maven RS.1 + Ammo. This is the ultimate backcountry Elk Rifle. This $4,000.00 package could be yours!

If you want a hunting story that is going to fire you up for season, listen to this podcast! Justin is a beast, he has DIY'd all of his trophy game tags, he's killed some absolute monster bucks, not to mention his canyoneering, and mountaineering feats. Last year he set a goal to put that same effort into killing a good bull and boy did he accomplish that goal. The best part about this elk hunting story is that Justin didn't spend weeks, or even pay some trespass fee. Justin is a weekend warrior on public ground who just worked his butt off and found a giant in that one place his gut always told him there would be one. This is an EPIC hunting story.
