  • Bringing Resilience Home ( and Tribute to 9/11 Rick Rescorla Story)
Disaster resilience is the ability of individuals, communities, organizations, and states to adapt to and recover from hazards, shocks, or stresses without compromising long-term prospects for development. According to the Hyogo Framework for Action, disaster resilience is determined by the degree to which individuals, communities, and public and private organizations can organize themselves to learn from past disasters and reduce their risks to future ones, at international, regional, national, and local levels.

Disaster resilience is part of the broader concept of resilience – ‘the ability of individuals, communities and states and their institutions to absorb and recover from shock while positively adapting and transforming their structures and means for living in the face of long-term changes and uncertainty.

In conceptual terms, vulnerability and disaster resilience are closely related. Some see vulnerability as the opposite of disaster resilience, while others view vulnerability as a risk factor and disaster resilience as the capacity to respond.

  • AHIMTs Taking a Leadership Role in Disaster Response
The importance of leadership in emergency management is widely acknowledged Popular culture reinforces this focus. It is common for movies to portray charismatic leaders who “save the day” by simultaneously handling information, resources, and wild authority. It is also common for real situations to be compared to these idealized images and for individuals to be hailed as heroes. But it is not enough to know leaders matter and make summary judgments. It is vitally important to understand how leadership in emergency management really works and the range of issues, considerations, and variables that impact leadership considerations.

  • Principles of Leadership, The Dale Carnegie Way
We are joined by Steve Thomas from the Orange County’s Dale Carnegie office. Steve works with proven training techniques that give organizations real transformation. By providing tailored professional development and training solutions in the core areas of Leadership, Presentations, Interpersonal Skills, Team Building, Sales and Customer Service, Steve and the team at Dale Carnegie are able to align businesses to exceed their performance goals
Although the more recent work of authors such as Abraham Zaleznik and Daniel Goleman has fundamentally changed the way we look at leadership, many of their themes were foreshadowed in W.C.H. Prentice’s 1961 article rejecting the notion of leadership as the exercise of power and force or the possession of extraordinary analytical skill. Prentice defined leadership as “the accomplishment of a goal through the direction of human assistants” and a successful leader as one who can understand people’s motivations and enlist employee participation in a way that marries individual needs and interests to the group’s purpose. He called for democratic leadership that gives employees opportunities to learn and grow—without creating anarchy. While his language in some passages is dated, Prentice’s observations on how leaders can motivate employees to support the organization’s goals are timeless, and they were remarkably prescient.

  • Using Incident Management Teams In the Urban Setting
Consistent with past practice, Urban Areas began a collaborative process to establish All-Hazards Incident Management Teams (AHIMT) . Today we are taking a deep dive into the AHIMT process and seeks to identify challenges and obstacles to collaboration with FDNY BC Rich DePrima. There is minimal agreement about how much collaboration has taken place in developing the AHIMT programs. The benefits of collaboration are believed to include the sharing of resources, developing positive relationships with other agencies, reducing operational costs, and providing a common framework for identifying and solving problems. These findings support the following recommendations for using collaboration in regional initiatives: an overall program strategy document that addresses the need for and commitment to collaboration, governance, personnel, competency, remaining relevant, and an exercise schedule.

  • Drones a Critical Asset for Emergency Operations
Drones in the emergency response space is not a new idea, however we have seen a growth of the application and use of drones by both small and large jurisdictions. Drones are a great tool. Today we sit-down with Chief Charles Werner (ret.) a world wide drone expert and director of Droneresponders.

Drones empower emergency managers and first responders to evaluate serious disaster situations. With realtime information that complements the information reported  from on the ground personnel, drones help complete the operational picture. Today drones have artificial intelligence , machine learning, augmented reality, infrared as some of their capabilities.

DRONERESPONDERS is a non-profit program created to unite these new aerial first responders, emergency managers, and search and rescue specialists under a unified organization to help learn, train, and test with one another with the ultimate objective of maximizing drone operations for public safety. DRONERESPONDERS is an official 501(c)3 non-profit Drones for Good™ program of AIRT, Inc.
