I found Travis Stroud—AKA @Doula.Dude—about four months ago, and I remember thinking, YES. More men need to hear this.

Travis is changing the conversation around birth by doing something incredibly important: educating husbands about their role in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Because Dad isn’t supposed to be a spectator in the room.

He can be her protector.
Her advocate.
Her steady presence.
Her encourager.
Her partner in understanding what’s happening to her body and her baby.
And, in so many ways, a doula for his own wife.

I truly believe Travis has a God-given mission in the work he is doing. His content is not only incredible—it challenges men to get curious, get educated, and actually show up for the birth of their children.

And our conversation was SO much fun. We talked about what it looks like for husbands to support undisturbed physiological birth the way God designed it, how they can protect the birth space, and what it means to become an incredible advocate for their wife and baby—even when they choose to birth in a hospital.

My hope is that this conversation inspires more husbands to stop thinking of birth as something that is simply happening to their wife…

…and start realizing that they have a powerful role to play.

In this episode, I sit down with my client Claire Stewart, who shares her journey through birth trauma after her first home birth—an experience marked by a typical cascade of interventions initiated by her midwife when she went past 42 weeks, ultimately leaving her feeling disempowered and disconnected from her body. Like so many women after midwifery abuse, Claire found herself questioning whether she could trust anyone in the birth space and began contemplating freebirth as a way to protect her autonomy. What unfolded instead was a deeply redemptive birth supported by a sovereign, loving licensed midwife and myself as her doula, where everything happened on Claire’s time, with full informed consent, autonomy, and reverence for her authority. Surrounded by support that honored her intuition and choices, Claire experienced an empowered, physiological birth—one that didn’t require doing it alone, but rather being fully held, heard, and respected. This conversation powerfully illustrates that autonomy is not about who you hire or don’t hire—it’s about always remaining in charge of your birth.

My name is Emily Stanwyck. I am a mom of three, a wife, a birth doula, a birth doula trainer, and birth educator. I began my journey into the birth world through fitness as a BIRTHFIT Coach and still am a practicing BIRTHFIT Coach. Through my work with moms in the gym, I learned about birth doulas and was instantly curious and felt drawn to this path. I took a doula training course in September of 2014 and my journey into the birth world began and I have never looked back! 

            I was so lucky to be introduced to the birth world before becoming a mother myself. Learning about the transition into motherhood from the perspective of a maiden was so valuable, I learned so much. Being called into birth work is truly that, a calling. I felt this urge from my heart to be of service to women and mothers from a young age, I just needed education and the tools to help me grow my business into a sustainable model. 

            I became a mother myself in 2018 and used a midwife for a beautiful and empowered home birth. Since my first son was born, I have had two more wonderful home births and cannot speak more highly to the power of arming yourself with birth education and birth rights before you enter the birth of each of your children. As a doula and educator, this is the foundation of how I support my clients, I make sure they are fully informed of what’s available to them in terms of birth preferences and in terms of informed consent for any intervention she may face.

            In the last 10 years I have attended over 60 births and am learning more and more every day and it is my joy and passion to be able to share these learnings and experiences with women who desire to walk this path into the birth world as well!
