Maybe you are over 35? Maybe you tested positive for GD? Maybe you had a C Section before?  Maybe you tested positive for GBS? WHO CARES!!!! If you are a healthy well informed and empowered mama who takes good care of her body, you should not be treated any different than any other pregnant woman! I am beyond frustrated with the medical bullying and fear mongering that happens based upon the nonsense. I would LOVE to pick some midwives brains on this and truly find licensed practitioners who TRUST a mother and her baby. The unnecessary gaslighting needs to stop. If you are a midwife or practitioner who hears this and would like to discuss this topic with me, PLEASE reach out! I am someone who is always looking to educate myself further, but I think trying to "predict" things that are going to happen with a woman's body is not based upon science and trust. This is based upon unresolved fear and as a practitioner witnessing too many traumas yourself and not fully processing what truly happened and taking this into other births with you. Every body and baby are different and we should not strip a woman's autonomy (I use this word a lot in this episode) away based upon YOUR fears. 
If there are signs of distress or an unhealthy lifestyle, this is when intervention is necessary. Until then, trust your body and trust your baby!

This is meant to educate and empower you! Maybe you will hear your own birth trauma in my story and find it healing to feel seen, heard, or validated. I find as a doula and healer of birth trauma in women, many of us have experienced so many similar abuses. I do have to take some accountability for what happened in my labor, and that is why I chose to do this episode. Looking back I could have advocated harder, chosen a better option in practitioner, trusted my body more, worked on my baby's position in pregnancy, practiced more pelvic floor prep and worked on flexibility, and taken better care of myself (covid didn't really leave a lot of options). However, I believe I had the birth I did with Adeline to make me a better doula and go down the path I have. So for that I am grateful to be a warrior for other women and protect them with the intensity that I do. My mission is now focused on preventing birth trauma in as many women as I can as well as healing birth trauma that was experienced. A LOT of trauma is preventable with the proper education and trust in yourself to advocate for what is best for you and your baby. Not every birth is straight forward, and if it isn't "by the book" thats normal too! There are so many things that happen in labor that practitioners use to gas light women all the time. Learning what can be "normal" and trusting and preparing for all the possibilities and how you will navigate them is the best way you can prepare for labor. As always I am here to empower you to trust your instincts and believe your baby is wise and knows what they are doing.

From Castor Oil to Cervical ripening creams, they all have an effect on your labor in some way. There are many women who have inductions or take castor oil (for the "natural" induction) and have successful vaginal births. Is that the true goal? How was the baby affected? Blood Pressure? Length of labor? True experience? Did you feel rushed? On a clock? Gas lit into "progressing your labor" because your prodromal labor was taking too long? Were you doing things to please your practitioner because of THEIR fear? Herbs and tinctures have their time and place, but when you are using them to start or "Promote" labor, you are missing the point of spontaneous labor and the true benefit of BABY deciding when baby is ready to come. A mom can literally be in active labor or transition and contractions can begin to slow to 10-20 minutes apart because the mom is exhausted and the body and baby are telling the mom to SLEEP! Sleep is the greatest tool in birth! Time to take a nap and shut out all that "pressure to progress faster". Every little nap you will wake up with a STRONG contraction. It's incredible what I have learned and witnessed with sleep being the best tool. When a midwife places castor oil in front of mom and tells her she will need to drink, it makes me sad and sick. Don't even get me started on pitocin. You have heard me talk about it plenty and it's dangerous effects.  The more we mess with birth the more we will be shown not to. Trust your body, trust your baby, and don't ever do anything that doesn't feel aligned with your instincts.

Many of us are taught to think of birth being "finished" once the baby comes out. Not many people understand the 3rd stage of labor or how to continue advocating for yourself in this stage. As a doula, I see most of the hospital trauma in this stage. The baby is separated from mom, the cord is cut entirely too soon, the placenta is yanked out of mom, and the dreadful aggressive and completely unnecessary fundal massage. The placenta birth is triggered by the same hormone cocktail that your baby is birthed with. Oxytocin. Continue the oxytocin flow through the birth of the placenta and honor that mom's postpartum bond with baby. These are things that should be taught more in both hospital AND home birth. Talk to your birth team. Make sure they are on the same page as you for your ENTIRE labor including the 3rd stage.

Your birth guest list (not just your team but the other people you want to invite) can make or break your home birth. Having too many people there can put a LOT of pressure on a laboring mom to progress or to not let out noises she needs or go inward. Too much distraction at your birth can disrupt the hormone flow. From family like mother or sister to the best friend, any and everyone coming to support you needs to be super familiar with home birth and everything involved. If your husband and mother don't get along, I highly suggest not putting both in a sacred space together at your birth. If you have a clingy toddler or a toddler that is still breast obsessed and you are touched out, I HIGHLY suggest finding a place to take the toddler during your birth so you can fully surrender and not be distracted or bothered. For all stages of labor! Having a team of people who fully support your decision and are respectful to each other and  the birth portal, is super important. Shift changes and people showing up last minute in a birth can completely disrupt the progress and energy that has been held. If you really want your mom or sister or best friend there, let them know your doula or partner will contact them when you say you feel ready to have them there. It could be at the beginning of labor or it might not be at all. I see a mom change her mind 98% of the time..... Once you are IN labor you want privacy and not a lot of prying eyes. Just prepare them to respect whatever decision you make in the moment. In the meantime have them take my childbirth course so they are prepared fully! haaaa!

This is one of the most common reasons for transfer. The exhaustion that days or even weeks of these intense sensations brings is a lot if you don't have the tools to navigate. Get a heating pad, a big jug of water, some snacks, a warm bath, a glass of wine.... whatever you can do to make yourself stay comfortable and relaxed enough to go back to sleep if it starts in the middle of the night. During the day if you can nap when they slow down...  badass! If you know you are experiencing what I am talking about, try to set your bed time a little earlier like 6 or 7 so you can get 3-5 good hours of sleep before those labor hormones kick back in and keep you awake. Whatever you do, don't bounce on your birth ball or curb walk or try to rush it along. This is a very natural and physiological way birth starts. Usually it means the baby is trying to get into a little better position so I always say do an inversion and some side ly release and shoot if you can do some stretching and prenatal yoga that can help. Breath work, meditation, trusting that the start and stop of labor IN ALL STAGES and PHASES is normal! Allow those pauses to rest. Let your mind go. Don't time those contractions. Trust your body and baby are doing what they need. You just need someone comforting to massage you and get you to be able to zen out or zone out on cat naps! If you have a doula reach out! You will KNOW when it is active labor. You won't be able to hold conversations and it will take all of your will power to get through each surge. This is also why I say don't invite too many people (even your best friends) to your birth too soon. I say give the doula the numbers to any extra support people you want around you at your birth and let your doula call them when you are really in the throws of labor (if you decide you still want those people because 9 out of 10 times a mom will change her mind). Watching eyes can be distracting and putting yourself on a clock will stall everything out. So try to rest and ignore until you can't anymore. You got this!

I would hear this word all the time when I was pregnant with my 1st. I never fully understood it until I witnessed pregnancy after pregnancy or birth after birth and I would witness a mom either get in her own way and have to transfer or truly surrender and magic would happen. This all starts before conception! Learning how to truly trust your body is the greatest gift you can give yourself in this life. Not just for birth, but for your overall health and healing journey. Our body is so wise and you add a baby to that and you have two wise beings working together. Birth WORKS without help 99% of the time. Yes sometimes we need help and when that time arises it is crucial you have a practitioner that trusts your body as much as you do. Educate yourself to the point where you can FULLY SURRENDER when the time comes.
