Please please understand that I believe EVERY WOMAN deserves to have the most beautiful birth experience. This episode may make me sound pretentious or maybe a little judgy and for that I apologize. I am only human.

As a doula, I believe the work we do should be out of passion and trust. Helping couples during very vulnerable times and very beautiful times. I am a very energy sensitive human and witnessing abuse literally sends my nervous system into crazy sick mode.
I was finding that after a few hospital births I would get very sick. I would feel exhausted and couldn't be present for my family.

This is not how birth work should be. You should feel a great sense of gratitude for the birth you just assisted (even the ones that end a not so favorable way because we can't control everything) If you know you and your family did EVERYTHING they could and still ended up not having the exact birth on their birth plan... there is still a sense of relief and pride. The mom will tend to still love her birth experience and not have trauma and you as a doula will be able to sleep after knowing your mama and you tried everything.

When I interview clients now I look for their trust in themselves. How trusting are they of the physiological birth left undisturbed and how educated are they? Then I want to see if energetically we connect. Birth is VERY INTIMATE. You need to connect on all sorts of energetic levels so mom relaxes when you arrive. My clients become my sisters. I am their sister, mother, helper, coach, and pain medicine. I want my presence to be empowering and assuring. During the pregnancy we develop a relationship of trust and sisterhood. I help her release any residual fears so that by the time labor starts she is empowered and knows how to FULLY SURRENDER. (upcoming podcast episode)

From the sound bowls and gongs that her amazing husband was playing, to the indigenous midwife (student midwife) that attended this birth, Erin's birth was nothing short of a ceremony. How all birth should be in my opinion. Erin's birth started with PROM (premature rupture of the membranes ... aka her water breaking) and thankfully I had taken many courses on how to assist birth that begins like this. (Thank you spinning babies)  One of the MAIN things I knew with PROM is that it happens in 10-13% of all births and labor contractions will usually begin within 12-24 hours and as long as you are staying hydrated there is no danger (hospital would say otherwise). Limiting or not doing cervical checks is a great way to prevent infection (which is the main risk once your water breaks) so we did just that... trusted her body and her baby and allowed her body to start laboring when it was ready.
She did incredible relaxing into trust (with ceremony experience she was no stranger to releasing fear and letting go) and getting rest. This set her up to have the incredible birth that followed! Can't wait for you to hear it. Enjoy!

Most women who are attempting vaginal birth do not plan to end up in a C Section, however, it is important to understand the process and how to continue to advocate for you and your baby if you do end up there.

The rate of C Section in this country is 32%+ (1 in 3) and many women haven't researched  what happens in a C Section and the things we can request. Below is an important list to remember in the birth and postpartum.

-Skin to Skin (you can absolutely get this)

-Delayed cord clamping

-Music

-No anti psychotics injected to the IV (anesthesia does this sometimes to keep mom calm during an awake procedure)

-Keep baby with mom (do not take them from mom to nursery baby goes where mom goes or DAD takes baby to postpartum room skin to skin)

-Latch ASAP for breastfeeding, if baby won't latch or it hurts, start pumping to help  supply. Very critical to do every 2-3 hours from birth.... not waiting 8-10 hours to start....

-Do not eat until you pass gas or poop!!!! Very important

-Lightly walk to help stimulate recovery and wake up the intestines.

The old Bait and Switch!
Do I think OBs are evil and do this on purpose? No. I think they are following protocol to cover their butts, and they just trust medicine and believe birth is a dangerous event verses a natural physiological thing that needs help with natural physiological things when it does needs help.
They definitely don't believe hands off approach is the best approach. From endless ultrasounds, 5 minute prenatal visits, inductions at 39 weeks based on a biased and flawed Arrive Trial, they follow ACOG guidelines blindly. This thinking and way of practicing medicine is causing an immense amount of trauma to both mothers and babies all over our country. The United States has the 3rd WORST maternal and fetal mortality rates in the WORLD!
 
Direct from the CDC website- "The maternal mortality rate for 2021 was 32.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared with a rate of 23.8 in 2020 and 20.1 in 2019."

So protocol has gotten worse and the practitioners need to see WHY this is happening, because our bodies haven't just decided to give birth differently.

I believe they think a mother who asks for an "all natural" birth is a difficult client. They smile and nod at the 1st visit and by week 38 they have thrown the birth plan out the window and they really don't allow a mom to spontaneous labor up until 42 weeks.
