  • Episode 78 - Saudi Arabia sends mixed signals | Trump and Russia | Rockets and Drones and oil, oh my!
Saudi Arabia is dramatically changing its oil exports to China and the US
    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/15/saudi-arabia-dramatically-changing-its-oil-exports-to-china-and-the-us.html
Mixed bag of signals about what Saudi relationship with United States is - are Saudis changing that relationship? Why are Saudis decreasing oil shipments to the United States and increasing exports to China? US is a reliable customer - Aramco can decrease its exports to the US without worrying that it will lose the US as a customer.

    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/trump-oil-sanctions-leave-russian-040000349.html
Sanctions on Iran and Venezuela have made Urals crude more expensive and therefore Russia made more money. Spread between Urals crude and European benchmark decreased as a result of sanctions. Is there a nefarious connections here?

API Monthly Statistical Report Review with Dr. Dean Foreman

    - petroleum demand for July 2019 is the highest since 2005. 14 year high. mixture of bright spots and weak spots. Relatively strong picture on balance.
    - Trucking: repression and weakness on industrial side
    - Jet fuel demand: people in North America still want to travel by jet. Not growing as fast as it was but its still growing. Solid growth, record demand for the month. Strong consumer activity. Historically there is seasonal variability in jet fuel demand but this year its been a straight line - no seasonal variability
    - API D-E-I (Distillate Economic Indicator) signaling continued economic slowing. Reading for July is 0. On a three month average still indicating contraction. Macro picture plays into this. U.S. economy continued to grow but diesel demand
    - U.S. crude oil production is 12.0 million bpd year-to-date. U.S. is basically filling in all of the oil demand growth. Really strong production growth in absolute terms. Not offsetting all of OPEC’s production cuts, but a lot of those cuts.
    - US lost 800,000 bpd of exports in July. But year on year we’re still up. Trend is very solid.
    - Supply growth is outpacing the demand growth.
    - Producers in the Permian, especially, are pulling rigs off. They might not put those rigs back H1 2020. There are the DUCs, but production should ease up a little bit. Will that be reflected in production numbers in Q4? EIA’s view is pace of growth will slow but production will still grow in 13 mbpd. Should start to see rig pullback in a few months in data. DUCs can be brought to market, and EIA is showing that number of DUCs is coming down. DUC numbers from EIA may be over-estimated.

    Discussion with Gene Epstein
Director at SoHo Forum - debate coming up on August 12 on Bitcoin!
Where is the economy heading right now? When will recession occur? How bad will be it be?
Perma-bears say recession that is to come will be worse than 2008 recession
Maybe will be mild recession similar to 2001 and 1991? Less severe bubbles now (housing and stock market) Distortion of interest rate - it’s too low but maybe not that low.
Global recession? Certain sectors could continue to do ok while others do not. Where the decline in jobs occurs is key.
If the United States sneezes, the rest of the world catches cold. Difficult to imagine that a recession in the U.S. won’t impact the rest of the world.

China says its economic growth has slowed to 6.2% from 6.4% - China won’t let it fall below %6 so does that mean government spending is coming?

Interview with Dr. Dean Foreman Chief economist from API to discuss the Monthly Statistical Report

Record US oil production sustained despite less drilling - how long will be see record production WITH less drilling. 12.2 million bpd production growing toward 13 million bpd. Pipeline infrastructure is key along with DUCs
DUCs can increase production for more than 6 months without another well being drilled. But productivity is also increasing. Technology is an important factor now. Targeting drilling and the amount that technology has added to learning.

Flaring - as productivity is up, so is flaring. Majority of flaring in Permian, but also a lot in Bakker. 5 billion cubic feet of capacity for natural gas to come online. What about LNG exports? Record amounts now flowing to Europe. Natural gas pricing is changing! EUropean natural gas prices have been cut in half! ($8 to $4). Key is to have a business model that gives you the ability to monetize the growth in the US natural gas market.

    Hurricane/Tropical Storm Barry - Impacts
1 million barrels per day of oil production shut in from Gulf of Mexico and 1.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas production - but the market hasn’t been impacted by this
We have a great cushion that the US oil and gas industry provides - so news of this hasn’t even really impacted the prices.

Jet fuel - Max plane still out of commission, but airplanes have replaced it with older planes in the fleet. Bigger question for airlines then for jet fuel consumption. Jet fuel consumption has been one of the brightest spots for demand.

Distillate economic indicator - still showing slowing. Freight trucking sector is technically in a recession now.

China - If a deal with China gets done we will a rally in the financial markets. Resumption of global trade flows, though this has been sporadic. Baltic Dry SHipping index went up 20% in June! And its up more in July. This is the time of year when goods get shipped out of CHina to get to where they need to be for the Holiday Season. Effort to beat another round of tariffs on China. $75 billion in tariff revenues coming into government from China. US government will get used to that. China has also depreciated its currency. 3/4 of all toys in the United States are imported from China.

Venezuela - going to get worse before it gets better.

Teasers for next month - Weather issues and end of summer driving season.

    API Monthly Statistical Report
US crude oil production high 12.2 mbpd
Texas producing 5 mbpd - is that good news or bad news right now? Good news! We are seeing a significant alleviation of serious bottlenecks.
Between Permian and Bakken we are flaring the entire natural gas usage of Israel in a year! How much natural gas does the US have? 100-200 years worth of natural gas.
For US LNG to get a foothold in Europe it would have to compete against so many other sources, including Africa! Less competition with Asia, which is why the US really wants to get contracts with China. If the US can convince Asian trading partners that US gas is reliable and US is reliable trading parter, it will increase liquidity and depth across the globe.
Slowing trend of industrial activity across the US - current statistics from IEA say concern is mostly in global economy not US. API economic indicators indicate reverse.
US demand for petroleum down to 20.1 mbpd - distillate demand is weak, diesel demand especially dropping. Fell 9% - is this why we keep seeing larger builds in US stocks? Are we using more domestically produced oil to compensate or are imports down? Are refinery runs down or are we exporting the unused diesel? What is driving them? Freight and agriculture are the big areas of weakness. Flooding in the Midwest is probably a factor - but also China’s decision not to buy US soybeans. Seems
We’ve got slipping gasoline and diesel demand but record jet fuel demand - this complicates the “economic slowdown” picture. The fact that jet fuel demand is still up could indicate that the weaknesses aren’t indicative of economic slowdown but really uncertainty due to the trade issues.
Concerns over whether there’s enough diesel fuel as we go into IMO 2020.
Alleviation of bottlenecks - by the end of 2019 will see about 1.5 million barrels worth of new petroleum pipelines come online. More for natural gas.

Problems remains - cost, range and slow charging times even with rapid charge.
    Impractical and unaffordable.

How long does an EV battery last? Spare parts issues?
Real problem is the cost of replacing the battery compared to the cost of the vehicle itself. Begin to degrade in performance after 7-8 years. Same issues with batteries in ICE cars, but replacing battery is a hundred dollars or so. Replacing an EV battery is several thousand dollars and the car might only be worth $7,000 by then.

    Who are EVs right for?
People who want to buy expensive cars. For most people it doesn’t add up. Nissan Leaf is cheapest EV on market and its $30,000. Compare that to Nilsson Versa ICE which is $14,000. Range of EV goes down in cold and when using “extras” like air conditioning.

Tesla is best EV model for performance.
EV pick up truck coming next year
Hybrid vehicles - much more successful and don’t suffer from many of the functional problems that EVs suffer from. Basically carries around its own charger. Problem with hybrids is cost - costs $3,000 more than comparable vehicle.
Car companies lose money on every electric car that is built. Tesla loses money on every car it seems. Tesla makes money selling credits to car companies that don’t manufacture electric vehicles and have to pay for these credits because of government mandates.

Why aren’t there $15,000 EVs even if they aren’t fast or fancy? The way the government mandates impacted EV development disincentivized companies from developing this.

    On ethanol
It is water attracted, which is problematic for boats and for power tools that aren’t designed to handle it.

    Use for generators too!

US federal regulations for fuel and mileage standards push companies to make expensive but incrementally more fuel economical vehicles. They are too expensive for people to buy.
