  • Fast pace of innovation with Richard Hopkins

Richard Hopkins is an EA Companion. He left school at 16 to work in Formula One which he saw “formula one as a bit of an avenue to make something of myself.“ And he has.

Now Richard is a Professor of Practice at UNSW and is training the engineers of the future on keep up with the innovations that are regularly happening. “What we don't want to do is create engineers that then have another further 12 months of onboarding in the workplace to familiarize themselves with that technology”

Richard discusses how universities and industry can work together to ensure we a training our future workforce to be up to date with the technology they will be asked to work with.

  • Abandoned Engineering with Ruby Heard

Ruby Heard is concerned about “how to deliver responsible, sustainable energy solutions to remote communities”. She works in the remote communities of Australia and the Pacific and see so many examples of abandoned engineering – “We've just left them with no support and no money to have these things maintained”.  Unfortunately, the solution is complex. From ensuring good systems are installed in the first place, through to robust community engagement and financial support for proper life-long maintenance.  That is just the beginning to the changes that need to be made.

  • Challenge to design with Stewart Garden

Stewart Garden joins us to discuss that design in infrastructure is a real issue in Australia.  This has been a problem building over the last 20 years, and we are at “an intergenerational low in the quality of design information and design output”.  And it’s an issue that will require changes is design standards, training, fee structures, politics, contracts and diversity, to name a few.

  • Antiquated Engineering with Joyce Ferng

Joyce Ferng believes we need “a change in the whole concept of how we design things and how we construct things”.

Change is inevitable, but Joyce Ferng spoke to Mel & Dom about how the engineering industry is falling behind, it needs to be more progressive.  She points out that engineers need to be more future-focused in not just solving problems of today, but also avoid creating the problems of the future.

  • SMR the future with Tony Irwin

Tony Irwin started working in power plants at 15 and has loved every minute of it.  He is now ‘retired’ - yet busier than ever! - Tony is passionately communicating to the wider community about generating energy from clean emission sources, of which nuclear must be part of the solution.

Tony believes that the key to moving Australia from one of the worst carbon polluters on the planet to having clean emissions is in Small Nuclear Reactors installed on the sites of decommissioned Coal Fire factories.
