I have Grammar Episode Nr. 27 for you in which we talk about the difference between other and another. I thought is was a lot more complicated but I don't think it actually is. Here's what I would stick to when it comes to translating them:

1. the other – el/la otro/a (alternativa)

2. others – otros/as (alternativas)

3. the others – los/as demás

4. another – uno/a adicional
