How To Really Use A WHAT IF

Ever ask yourself “What If ______ Happened?”
Ya, me too. The big problem is that asking that question normally doesn't help out in the long run.

Asking ‘What If’ isn’t wrong or bad. It’s just how you use it.

  • Choose Your Mindset: The Helpful Mindset Habit
    Develop The Helpful Mindset Habit

It’s all about the habit of thinking in a way that will help you to achieve your goals and enjoy life. Habits make things easier. The more you do something the easier it becomes. Here we want to find simple ways to create the habit of thinking in a way that will help you set goals, take action, and enjoy life. You can develop a helpful mindset habit.

The more you do something the easier it is to do it naturally. If every morning you wake up and have a cup of coffee, then tomorrow morning you’ll probably wake up and go have a cup of coffee without having to consciously remind yourself to do so. The main point of developing a helpful mindset habit is so that you easily think of the things that will help you succeed when you need it.

Developing the helpful mindset habit will take being intentional, a little effort, and keeping at it.

    How To Shift Your Thinking

Here are a few ways you can help your mindset shift and strengthen the connections in your brain to think in the way you want.

    See It

Visualize in your mind what it is you what to think about. See it. Experience it. Feel it. Add details, feelings, emotions, and use your senses to add to the experience.

    Say It

If you’re giving yourself a pep talk or using a mantra to shape your thoughts and self-image, say it out loud. Say it with confidence.

    Write It

Journaling can be a great way to think in the desired way. I particularly like this method when it comes to remembering my successes and gratitudes. The simple act of writing down what I’m grateful for in my life has a huge impact on my mindset.

    Think It

If you don’t do anything else, at least think it. You shape your thinking by thinking. Visualization, saying it out loud, or writing it down each are powerful and effective ways to shape thoughts. But, you can just consciously think about what you want to be in the habit of thinking.

Add Power To The Habit Time/Place

Don’t leave it up to when you ‘feel’ like doing it. Set a time and place then just do it.

    Trigger

Triggers are great. When _____ happens, I will do _____. Simple. Again no thought required. You just do it.

    Repeat

This is where you create the routine or the habit. By repeating the same action in the same situation it becomes second nature. Nice and simple.

      One More Key Thing

This one is obvious, you already know it too, but it is crucial.

Put In What You Want To Get Out!

If you want to have a negative mindset, then put negative stuff into your mind. Want a positive, enjoy life mindset? Then, put positive things into your mind.

Choose what you put into your mind. Choose what you focus on. Choose what you think about. Then, you will choose your mindset.

Choose to develop a mindset that will help you to set goals, take action, and enjoy life.

  • Choose Your Mindset: Now It's Your Choice
The Power In The Mindset You Choose

Your mindset can be seen has how you naturally think in a certain way. It’s not right or wrong. Each one of us is unique and we each naturally think in our own ways. Just like anything that we do repetitively, over and over again, it becomes a habit. Habits make things easier.

If you frequently think about all your successes (even the small ones), then you might be more confident than if you think a lot about your failures and times you screwed up. The more you do it or think it, the stronger the habit and easier it is to do it even when you don’t try.

    Your Mindset As A River

Think of floating down a river in a kayak. If you want to go in the direction the water is flowing, then the trip can be pretty easy. Going down stream is like going along with the habit of thinking in your mind’s natural way. It’s pretty easy. But, what if you don’t want to go down stream? What if your mindset isn’t going where you want? Or you know your natural mindset isn’t a helpful one?

If you want to go somewhere different, then be intentional and develop a new habit of a new mindset. It will take effort. And the effort is worth it.

That river you were floating down didn’t develop overnight. You’re new habit of thinking in a different way can take time too. But, the more you choose what you think about and focus on the stronger, deeper, and easier that thinking becomes. You actually create stronger connections in your mind to think in that way, which is one reason why choosing your mindset is so very important.

    Want or Need: Confidence?

Your past successes and the progress you’ve made can help you to feel more confident.

    Motivation?

Seen that crystal clear goal, your vision, that you’re working toward can help you feel motivated. And it can help you to take action even when you don’t feel like it.

    Positivity?

Struggle with being negative sometimes? Remembering the fun and enjoying times can help lift your mood and make life more enjoyable.

    Purpose?

Lose sight of the purpose sometimes? Remembering your big reasons why can add purpose to that actions you’re taking.

    Direction?

You can choose your actions and your focus. Just start from where you’re at right now. Take a step toward where you want to go. And continue.

  • Choose Your Mindset: Your Focus
    You Choose Your Focus

What if you chose to focus on the things that would bring you health, wealth and happiness?

    That would be awesome!

    Your Focus Your Choice

You can choose where you focus. That’s what this whole series is about. Yes, things can grab our attention. That happens. For me, it happens all the time. Regardless of what grabs my attention, thought, it’s my choice if I choose to focus on it or not.

What will you choose to focus on?

The things that will help you achieve goals and enjoy life?

    Or

Whatever comes across your path and grabs your attention?

    A Very Well Known Secret

The path of least resistance probably won’t help you achieve your big goals and have the life you want.

If the path of least resistance lead to success, then everyone would have the exact lives they wanted. There would be no need for self-improvement because everyone would already be there.

That’s the bad news. The path of least resistance and doing whatever comes easiest doesn’t tend to take people where they want to be in the long-term. You will probably have to put in a little effort, be intentional, choose where you focus to develop the mindset that will help you succeed and achieve your goals.

The good news or really the GREAT news is that you can do it. You can choose to focus on the things that will help you succeed.

What will you choose to focus on?

Clearly, I think the best things to focus on are the exact things we’ve gone over in the last posts. But, when it comes to you and your life, what I think isn’t as important as what you think. What do you think would help you? I share helpful information that has helped (and continues to help) me. At the same time, we are all unique individuals and there may be different things that can help you and your mindset. There may be something that I completely missed in this series that you need to focus on so that you can have the mindset that will help you to achieve your goals and enjoy life. I’m nowhere close to being perfect and neither is this website. That’s where you need to come in.

    What would help you succeed?

    Confidence?

    Motivation?

    Positivity?

    Purpose?

    Direction?

If any of those would help you, then definitely start choosing your mindset. In the next post I will attempt to wrap up this series on choosing your mindset. Don’t miss it. Choose your mindset because it can help you to set goals, take action, and enjoy life.

  • Choose Your Mindset: Your Power Your Actions
    Your Power:
    You Choose What You Do!

You get to choose what you do. It’s that simple. Okay. Before you you tell me that you don’t get to choose what you do. Let’s make sure you know where I’m coming from. I’m a dad of twins, who’s day job is working for a large agency with tons or regulations and oversight, my wife’s work schedule is more demanding and can be less flexible than mine, money can be tight, my time is often spoken for and short. Even with the demands and requirements on me, I choose what I do. I choose my actions. They are my choice. I own them. They are my power.

I venture to say the same is true for you. Your actions are your choice. Now, you may choose to fulfill the duties and requirements you have on you. If so, awesome. Be proud of yourself. Own your actions. Just because something is required of you doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give yourself credit for doing it. These  are successes that are often missed when remembering our successes. Remember them. Own them.

Also, what you do is your choice. You have the power to take small steps to improve your mindset and make it one that will help you to achieve your goals and enjoy life. You can make that choice by taking the steps.

You don’t have to do it. But, you can. It’s within your power. Your choice to choose your actions is your power.

Too busy? Too much going on? Okay. Once again, it’s your choice.

This whole entire series about choosing your mindset isn’t to put more things on your plate for you to do. It’s to show you that reminding ourselves of certain things can keep our mindsets helping us to make the progress we want.

  • Choose Your Mindset: Fun & Enjoyment
Use Your Fun & Enjoyment To Have More Of Both

Barry had a great date night with his wife on Saturday night. They got a babysitter and went out for dinner and a movie. Nothing super fancy, but just really nice. They both had fun and enjoyed their time together. Then, Monday morning came. Barry was off to work. He quickly was right back into grumbling about work and thinking about his struggle to keep up. It seems to him that he can’t ever get ahead no matter how hard he works. Barry didn’t think much about the nice time he had. When ask about his weekend, he thought about it for just that moment and then back to work and not a second thought. Bonnie also had a great date over the weekend. Her and her husband went out for dinner and a movie too. They enjoyed themselves just having a little bit of time to relax and be together. Monday morning also hit Bonnie pretty hard. When the thoughts of work, working hard, and the struggle to keep up crept into her mind she starting feeling kind of miserable. So, she did something different. She didn’t like feeling miserable and knew she could choose her mindset. Bonnie decided to take a minute (just one single minute) and replay some of the fun she had over in her mind. She even said out loud how much fun and enjoyment she had. After that minute, Bonnie felt a little bit better.

Choose What You Think About Want To Be Miserable?

If you want to be unhappy, all you need to do is spend time thinking about what you don’t have, haven’t be able to do, how life/things could be better, or things you missed out on. Simple. Do that and you can be miserable too. What about the other side?

    Want To Have More Fun?

Want to be happier? Even a little energized? Think about the good things more. You can do it because you can choose your thoughts. Ever notice that when you’re having a great time it feels nice, you may even have a little bit more energy, and time can pass quickly? You can choose to have a better time NOW by reminding yourself, replaying in your mind, and reliving some of the fun you’ve had. It’s simple. You can choose what you think about. Choosing to think about the good, fun, and enjoyable things more will help them to be bigger in your life. When to fun is bigger, more memorable, and more thought about, you can live it more.    Like all the other suggestions in this series, It Will Take Some Work & Effort. Making yourself think about the fun and enjoyment you’ve have may not come natural. That’s okay. It definitely didn’t (and doesn’t) come naturally to me either. In fact, it felt pretty weird the first time I tried it. But, the weirdest part isn’t how I felt doing it. The weirdest part (and the absolute best part) is that it works.
