  • The Big 3 Rule For Focus & Productivity
Follow The Big 3 Rule For Focus & Productivity

You have goals. You have things you want to do. But, there is probably more things to do than you can do right now. Of course, you can’t do it all at once. You can’t even do it all today. So, how do you stay on track of all of it and keep moving toward your goal?

One big rule I follow is the Rule of 3. It is ridiculously simple, helpful, and powerful.

Take all the things that you want to get done and select the top three that will move you closer to you goal. Write them down. Each night I write the big three things I want to get done the next morning. That way when I get up I know what to work on to make progress to my goals.

The Big 3 Isn’t Just For The Mornings

You can use the Rule of 3 for your mornings, days, weeks, months, quarters, or years. It can help. 3 is a good number. It is easy to track 3 things. It’s not too big or overwhelming.

Now, I do make one little adjustment. I select 1 Key too. I note what the 1 things that I can do to make the day a success. If there was only one thing that you got done, then what would you want it to be?

You’ll know which three things you can do to really make progress AND you’ll know what to make sure you definitely conquer (or what to do first).

  • Use Inspiration To Help You Hit Your Goals
Get what you need to succeed

Have you ever felt really inspired?

Maybe you saw a movie where the underdog came up from nothing, overcame some great challenge, and was able to conquer their goals.

Maybe you read a powerful quote that spurred you to take steps to improve your life and pursue goals important to you.

Maybe you know someone who was able to completely change their life for the better.

Maybe you…. found inspiration somewhere at some time that help you take some action.

Inspiration can be great thing for conquering goals. When you feel that surge of inspiration, taking action and needed steps to make a change becomes easier. But, just life motivation, inspiration can be fleeting sometimes. So, I want you to be able to find it, cultivate it, and use when you need it.

If you want to be able to use inspiration when you need it, then first know where to find it.

When have you been inspired to take action toward your goals to improve your life?

Where did you find that inspiration?

  • How You Start Can Impact The Rest
How You Start Can Impact The Rest

If you have a big race you were going to run, would you wake up right before it was supposed to start, drink a bunch of beer, eat a doughnut, and then start running?

If you had a major test that you desperately needed to pass, would you stay up the entire night before going bar hopping just to show up later without any preparation?

Well, I hope you wouldn’t. What I hope you would want to do is to prepare (at least a little bit) for anything that you want to succeed at doing.

The same is true for your days. I say prepare each day and do your best to start well because each and every day matters. What you choose to do today will impact how you perform tomorrow. And your days will add up to your year and years add up to your life.

So, YES each day is kind of like a test. How do you want to do?

    Set Yourself Up For Success

Do you feel like each day you are setting yourself up for success?

If not, then now is a perfect time to start. There are a lot of different wonderful suggestions you can find out there for the best way to start your day. But, there is one major point I want you to think about as you choose how you will start your days. You start your day the night before.

How I Start My Days Off
    • Go to bed
    • Write a little and prep for tomorrow
    • Wake up early
    • Water
    • A little movement
    • Know first steps

  • Are you clear?
Are You Clear On What You Want?

Being clear on exactly what you want, who you want to be, and what it means to you can be a powerful asset.

There is a lot of power in clarity. Have you been there where you know that you want something different, for something to change or improve, knowing that you’re capable of more and better things, but don’t know exactly what that is or how to make it happen.

If you’ve even been there or are there now, then you definitely know the power of clarity.

4 Things To Get Clear: What You Want To Achieve

What is it that you want? Do certain goals or experiences come to mind. What feelings are there when you think of what you want. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of your ideal life?

      Who You Want To Be

Have you even thought about the type of person you want to be? Your ideal self. What do you want to be know for? Identifying the kind of person you want to be can help you to clarify what you’re working toward.

      Why You Want It

The Big WHY. Know your reasons why you want to achieve your goals. Your reasons why can be a powerful motivator. They can help keep you on track and focused and make it easier to get back on track when you stumble. Working hard toward any goal can be tough. It’s hard work. So, of course it’s hard. But, being really clear on the most important reason why you want it can make the effort a little easier.

How You’ll Get It And Become It

What’s your plan? Do you have one? Your plan doesn’t need to be perfect (it won’t be). It doesn’t need to include every single possible step or contingency. You’ll probably need to change it, adjust it, modify it, and improve it. But, that doesn’t mean don’t make it. Make a plan and know your next step.

  • Choosing what you want isn’t enough
Choosing What You Want Isn’t Enough

Yes! Make A Decision! Choose What You Want! Set Your Goal!

And that’s it, right? Just set it and forget it?

    NO!!!

You may remember those late night T.V. commercials with the “set is and forget it” slogan. That describes a lot of what many people want today when it comes to goals. If fact it may not be anything recent.

Other people want to be able to set goals and then not do the work and then magically hit them. (I won’t lie that does sound pretty nice.)

Sure, it’d be cool if you could just declare what you want and get it without doing anything else. Besides, really figuring out and setting goals, detailing what you want and why, making a plan, and writing it all out is a lot of work. Shouldn’t that be enough?

Well… Not if you want to actually achieve and make progress. All that goal setting, plan, and writing is a huge help to get you going in the right direction. Those steps can make the journey faster, easier, and more enjoyable. But, the effort doesn’t stop with those first steps.

It’s not a decision (or a true goal) until you take action!

A real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken a new action. If there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided. – Tony Robbins

  • You Choose Your Elephant
    You Choose Your Elephant

Don’t blame your goals on anyone else.

You have the opportunity to set your goals. In fact, you are the only one that can really set your goals. And just in case you new to Eat Your Elephant or NickMaizy.com let me tell you I like it want people set goals.

Get Excited – They’re Your Goals!

Don’t set goals you don’t care about. The is no sense in putting in the time, effort, and attention if you don’t really care about achieving it. You might as well set goals you want to accomplish. That way you’ll give it your best and maybe enjoy the journey because it’s meaningful and important to you. Your results will be way better too.

A couple weeks ago I did an episode on You Actions Are Yours – Own Them.

The same is true for your goals. OWN THEM!

    Are New Year’s Resolutions Goals?

No! Setting a goal is a lot more than saying you’ll make some changes after waking up Jan 1st thinking that it would be nice to have more energy, money, and focus.

Can a resolution be a goal? Sure. Just actually set the goal. Write it down, be specific, really think about it, make a plan, plan for obstacles, focus on your goal, check it on your progress regularly and adjust the plan as needed. You can google ‘SMART’ goals if a want a decent framework zeroing in on your goal.
