3 Truths To Keep You Moving Forward

The road to achieving your goals can be long and difficult. If you have big goals, then you already know that. You may also already know a few things that can help you achieve those big goals.

If you’re anything like me, then reminding yourself of things you already know can help you to keep moving forward. It’s easy to get caught up in everyday life, being busy, working, doing this and that, even getting frustrated when the progress isn’t coming as fast as you’d like. I know I’m not the only one who has experienced some of those.

What do I try to do when I need a mental boost get myself back on track with the right mindset? I remind myself of a few truths.

      3 Reminders For You Success

    • Small steps can take you a great distance.
      • If you’re taking steps going forward you’re making progress. Progress will carry you to your goal. You don’t have to achieve everything in one day. Just keep taking steps. When you keep taking steps forward, you keep moving closer to your goals. You learn and improve along the way. Over time amazing things can happen.
      • Success favors the persistent.
    • You choose what you do.
      • You are the one who chooses your actions. Yes, you probably have demands for your time, attention, and money. But, you choose what you do. Take ownership of that choice and make it work for you as good as it can. This is your power. Own it.
    • The past does not equal the future.
      • This is one of the truths that I am most grateful for in life. You may not know a lot about my past and the details aren’t terrible import for this point. Just know that I was in a bad place for a good number of years there. Through a great deal of hard work, change, accepting help, persistence, and the grace of God I made it out. My life is unrecognizable compared to that before. Believe me, someone what was really down and out, that the past doesn’t have to equal the future.

Remind yourself of the things you need to know that will help you achieve your goals. They may be things that you do already know in the back of your mind. Bring them to the front. Keep you mindset and focus where it needs to be so you can conquer your goals.

  • What Will Make A Good Next Step?
How To Make Gains Where Your Want NOW

You want your efforts to be meaningful. Make sure they are taking you where you want to go.

    1) Decided what area you want to improve.
    • Not every life area is important to everyone.
    • Consider priority – the importance of the life area.
    • Consider urgency – how bad you need to improve.
    2) Pick you NEXT step
    • Pick the next step for where you’re at RIGHT NOW.
      • If You’re In Debt Up to your eyeballs, then you might not want to worry about starting an investment portfolio.
      • If you’re overweight, then don’t waste time worrying about the difference in juicing different types of red kale.
    • Keep it simple! Don’t make it more complicated.
      • This is one that I can struggle with sometimes.

Don’t get distracted by this things you’ll need to do or know far down the road. There are plenty of steps you’ll take later. But, they come later. What you do now is what will get you to what you can do later. I know I may sound like this should be so easy. My point is the simpler you keep it the easier it will be. Maybe not easy, but easier.

What simple milestone can you work toward that makes sense for where you’re at right now? What is the next step you can take for where you’re at right now?

  • Get Advisors
“A wise man has many advisors”

Yes, a wise woman also has many advisors. Following this proverb saved my butt recently. And many times in the past too. Something came up at work and I was close to handling it in not the best way. Fortunately, I have people that are willing to help me out when I need it and give advice that helps me stay on track with my goals there.

Long story short, I was offered an opportunity at work that wouldn’t really be a good option for me. I knew it wouldn’t be in my best interest to accept it. But, I didn’t know how exactly to address the situation so that it would work out in the long run. That is where I needed advice. It was really a great opportunity for me to experience the value of having multiple advisors, or at least multiple people that are willing to listen and offer their opinion based on experience.

Advisor may sound a little strong. It could be a mentor. Someone who has officially agreed to guide and help you along your journey to a goal. That may be one of your advisors. At the same time, an advisor could be a lot less informal. One of the people I went to was a formal supervisor that I had a good relationship with and I knew would listen to me. Not a formal ‘advisor’ or anything. But, was very very helpful.

      Value Their Opinion

When people know you value their opinion, they are more likely to give you a valuable opinion. Try to let those that have knowledge and experience in the areas you want to improve in know that you value their opinion.

      Develop Your Reputation

Also, develop the reputation that you are worthy of advice. That means do the work and try to do it well. People won’t want to waste their advice on someone who isn’t going to do anything with it. Why advise someone who won’t do the work to implement the advice?

      Ask A Specific Question

If you need advice, just ask. As the saying goes “if you don’t ask, the answer is always NO.” So, just ask. Is there someone you know with a little knowledge or expertise that could help you in the area you want to improve? Ask them a specific question.  Being specific can be less overwhelming than a broad “what should I do with my life” type question.

      Get Advice

The best way to get advisors is just to get advice. Listen to it. Think about it. Follow what is best for you. Work hard at it. Thank them for helping! Repeat as needed.

  • Helping Others Helps Yourself
Be Kind – It May Help You Achieve Your Goals!

Unless you goal is to be a jerk. If it is, then being selfish, hurtful, and mean will probably help. But, if your goals are anything related to being the best version of yourself and enjoying life, then be kind and help others.

      Helping Helps Happiness

It’s really simple. Helping others promotes our own happiness. There is something about helping other people that benefits the one doing the helping. In school I learned about a study where they took two separate groups of people and asked them questions to rate their levels of happiness. They gave each person twenty dollars. One group they just told them to spend the money that day. The other group had to spend the money on someone else that day. Afterward, each person rated their happiness levels again. Those that spend money on others had a statistically significant increase in happiness. Simple study. Interesting results.

    Small Steps Count

You don’t have to sell all your possessions and give the money away for helping other to help you.

Doing small things to help others. They don’t have to be huge to make a huge difference. Small acts can have a great impact. And doing small things on a regular basis is would develops the habit.

What does helping have to do with achieving your goals?

Helping others promotes your own happiness. Being happy can help you take action when you need to and keep moving forward toward your goals. Having a positive view of life can help you to keep taking the steps you need to achieve. And there is another benefit. When you help other people, people may end up helping you back. It is just one of the things that “what goes around comes around.” How can you expect people to help you if you’re not willing to help others. So, be kind and help others. It just may help you achieve your own goals too.
