Poems for the Speed of Life

Ep. 156: "Thinking" by Walter D. Wintle

Listen Later

I am a great believer in personal development. In fact, this podcast, this project, is a marriage of two things that interest me greatly — the yearning that seems to be innate in the human mind and human heart to improve ourselves, to develop our skills and knowledge, to broaden our mind and our horizons, and the power of literature to move us and transcend us.

Great literature — novels, poetry, plays, films and film scripts — can be as powerful an agent of change and personal development as any other.

I first came across this poem in a classic of personal development, the grandfather of so-called “self-help books”, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.

It reminds me of a quote often attributed to Henry Ford, the inventor of the Ford motor-car: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't – you're right!”

The author of this poem, Walter Wintle, is a complete ephemera. There is almost no detail anywhere on the Internet about his life, and there is a strong argument to be made that he did not even exist, and that the name was a pseudonym of somebody else.

First published in the Unity journal in 1905 and was included in Think and Grow Rich in 1937, it is a potent reminder to us all that the greatest thing we can do in our everyday challenges is change the way we think about them.
