Our special Father’s Day month continues with former NFL Coach, sports analyst, and dad to 11 kids, Tony Dungy. He opens up about his journey as a coach, how he knew it was his calling, the time he almost switched paths, and how he eventually knew it was time to walk away from the sidelines for good after nearly 20 years. He talks about the cross roads he faced during his first head coaching opportunity and the one question that cost him the job but would eventually become the same question that helped him land his first head coaching position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also talks about the resistance he faced in Tampa Bay and how he overcame the setback of being fired, to eventually become the first black coach to win a Super Bowl. Coach Dungy also shares what it was like coaching one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time, Peyton Manning. He and Paula reminisce about their hometown of Jackson, Michigan and the unique connection Paula’s family has to his mother.
“When you’re the boss you have to set the tone and you have to do this, and if you really want to rise to the top, you have to do this, this, and this, and that’s when you have choices to make.”
