The following episode features Ted Westervelt, regarded by many, including myself, as one of the originals who have been advocating and educating about promotion and relegation, both in the United States and abroad, for well over a decade.
As you’ll see in this episode, he is very well-versed in the subject. And despite some suggesting that this topic has been thoroughly discussed, it has only just begun, ladies and gentlemen. There is much misunderstanding, and the complexity of what promotion and relegation actually entails runs deep. Hint: It is not merely a league format.
This conversation took place just a few days ago, on the eve of an escalating conflict between Major League Soccer and its attempts to undermine the U.S. Open Cup, the country’s longest-standing tournament with over 100 years of heritage.
And guess what? It is connected to promotion and relegation. The fact of the matter is that due to the absence of promotion and relegation, and instead the presence of a single entity, MLS, LLC, monopolizing the entire ecosystem, that monopoly power is now tarnishing our Federation’s reputation. The Federation, which is meant to advocate for all constituents in the American soccer ecosystem.
This includes you, parents of a 7, 12, 15, or 18-year-old child navigating their way through the ecosystem. It includes you, the coach of a youth soccer team, and all the struggles you face. It includes every soccer club and youth league in the United States, along with all associated businesses off the field. All of them are directly impacted by these issues.
So, hang on tight, and let’s listen to Ted Westervelt.
If you are a coach or a parent of a player, we’ve also codified and made available the remarkable work of a coach who trained and shepherded many, many players from the age of 9 all the way to graduating them to being professionals.
The products that show you how this was done, is what sponsors this episode.
