On this episode of The Life of Phys Podcast, I sit down with Joe D’Agostino, a New Jersey–based photographer, writer, and SWAT Team Commander whose journey shows how photography can be a path to resilience and healing.

Joe grew up surfing, skateboarding, and practicing Jiu Jitsu, before spending the last 24 years serving as a police officer, where he is both a SWAT Commander and Law Enforcement Sniper. His experience in law enforcement exposed him to the intense challenges first responders face, leading him to help spearhead his department’s resiliency program to support those coping with PTSD.

Alongside his career in public service, Joe has built a reputation in the photography world. He has been a contributing writer for FujiLove Magazine and has had his images featured in numerous publications.

For Joe, photography is more than an art form, it’s therapy. After decades in a career that often exposed him to life’s darkest moments, he now uses photography to view the world differently, capturing the beauty in everyday life as a way to navigate his own journey with PTSD.
