In the podcast this week, “Jesus is the light of the world, BUT the world is getting darker and darker,” I kinda go after the fear-based version of the Gospel and religious dogma that many Christians have been taught. I really want to challenge Christians to change our perspective on ‘the world is getting darker’ idea.

The narrative in the church has tended to be one of a bleak future - of the tribulation, the antichrist, armageddon, the rapture and people being left behind. Pretty scary stuff, especially when you’re a child. But this is not the victorious future that the Gospel tells us about.

The Gospel tells us that Jesus is the Lord of lords, that all power and authority has been given to Him, that He has the victory over the enemy and death and hell, and that He (including His power and authority) lives in us.

Considering that, along with Romans 8:19-22 - that all of creation groans and eagerly waits for the manifestation of the sons of God - what if the world is only getting ‘darker’ because the church has been lied to about its authority? Because, with all of the authority we have, we are just watching the world get darker - resigned, fearful, and depressed about the future because of the bad theology we’ve been taught?

What if the only reason the world is getting darker is because the church doesn’t know who she is? Because the church hasn’t stepped into the fullness of being sons of God, being led by the Spirit, and living in union with Jesus?

What we believe about the future matters. There is a relationship between creation and the sons of God. Creation responds to us (science and quantum physics confirms this). And creation is groaning to be governed.

What would the world look like if we, the church, got a revelation of Jesus? Of who we are in Him? Of our role on this planet? What would change? Who would be saved? Who would be transformed from a Saul to a Paul? How would humanity respond to the actual good news and love of Jesus? These are things worth considering.
