What many don’t know is that physical fitness has also been an important part of my life for decades. From martial arts and weightlifting to navigating life as a blind person, I’ve come to appreciate just how important our physical well-being is to living well. Over the last several years, that appreciation has grown into a vision: creating a place that encourages people to invest in their health not only when something goes wrong, but as a normal and intentional part of living well. Omar Binno holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Communications and English Literature, and earned his Master’s in Liberal Studies from the University of Detroit Mercy in 2000, with a concentration in public relations and marketing. He is also a recording engineer and co-founder of Healing Arts of the Little Flower, a nonprofit offering integrative therapies for individuals with disabilities and trauma.

Rising from the Ashes is happening today at Huntington Place in Detroit, welcoming Catholics from across the Archdiocese of Detroit. The day features keynotes by Bishop Daniel E. Flores of Brownsville, Texas, Sr. Josephine Gartrett, CSFN, Fr. John Riccardo and Jeff Cavins, along with an evening concert by Matt Maher & Sarah Kroger. A Eucharistic procession — potentially the largest in the archdiocese’s history — will process from Huntington Place to the Spirit of Detroit statue on Woodward Avenue, with a blessing over the city and the Church of Detroit from Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger of Detroit.

Detroit Catholic: ‘Rising’ revival calls for Detroit faithful to be a people of hope rooted in Christ

Throughout the day, the thousands of attendees will hear from renowned Catholic speakers such as Bishop Daniel E. Flores of Brownsville, Texas (and a former auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit); Fr. John Riccardo, founder of ACTS XXIX and a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit; Sr. Mary Grace, SV, of the Bronx, N.Y.-based Sisters of Life; and Jeff Cavins, creator and founder of the popular Great Adventure Bible Study. Nationally known musicians, such as Matt Maher, Sarah Kroger, Steve Angrisano and Sarah Hart, are set to perform, along with local artist Santiago Fernandez, at a concert at the end of the revival, wrapping a day of spiritual revival, praise and worship.

On Saturday, May 23, Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger ordained four men to the sacred priesthood for the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Deacons Lizandro Barba, Karl Finkbeiner, James Musgrave and Daniel Whalen became priests “now and forever, in the order of Melchizedek,” as it is worded in the Rite of Ordination.

Each man’s journey to the priesthood is as unique as the man himself, but beginning Saturday, they will share the common bond of being priests for Christ and His Church.

Fr. Daniel Whalen is an Associate Pastor at the Church of the Divine Child in Dearborn. He shares his journey to the priesthood with Vanessa today.

“My journey to the priesthood started in a very gentle, progressive way of understanding my vocation and just learning and living the Catholic family life,” Deacon Whalen told Detroit Catholic. “While altar serving and learning more about the Mass, I started to fall in love with the Church, with the Mass and the Eucharist.”

Alexis Konja is the Development Director at the Lennon Center in Dearborn Heights. She joins Vanessa today to talk about the wonderful work they do and to promote their upcoming events!

Trial begins in California’s lawsuit against pregnancy resource centers’ abortion pill reversal resources

(OSV News) — California’s lawsuit against two pro-life nonprofit organizations that specialize in helping to reverse the immediate effects of abortion pills went to trial June 24. The Thomas More Society announced the start of the bench trial in the Superior Court of Alameda County June 23, saying California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta sought “to punish and permanently silence” its clients, Heartbeat International and RealOptions Obria Medical Clinics.
