Melbourne in 1993 were a team in-between. On the back of their late 80’s revival the Demons led by John Northey had contested five straight finals series but had never tasted the ultimate success.
The team needed to be reimagined, and Melbourne decided to go leftfield with its choice for a new coach.
When Neil Balme was appointed coach of Melbourne the Victorian footy public expected the wildman of the Grand Final 1973 in coaching form – a hot gospeller in the Kennedy or Barassi mould.
What they got was nothing like they expected.
In 1993 Neil Balme was to bring a whole new demeanour and philosophy to the AFL that would see him play an influential role in footy for the next 25 years.
The Greatest Season That Was: 93 documents our contention that in 1993, footy was never better. Hosted by Adam Collins, Dan Brettig and Shannon Gill, this series is an in-depth exploration of one amazing season.
