Early 1800s New Orleans was a different time. A major issue, especially in the southern United States then, was slavery. The concept and practice in general is despicable and inhumane, but there were those, like Madame Delphine who took it to a whole other unspeakable and horrifying level of brutality. So much so that even her slave owning peers sought and demanded justice for the slaves working in her home in the French Quarter.
