有時上課的時候會碰到同學問這樣的問題，同學在學英文的時候常常碰到中文翻譯意思一樣的字，但是用英文時卻因為不知道要怎麼放到句子中，這也是常見的學習英文的困擾之一。例如： prior to / before /ahead of /in advance /beforehand他們使用時差別在哪裡呢？如果只看中文意思，可能會覺得很混淆。我們一起來看以下的解說，讓同學更瞭解。
(一) prior to (在…之前)
使用prior to表示在某事情的前面，也就是說直接把prior to 放在你要加的名詞之前。
例如:登機之前就可以說prior to departure、活動之前就可以說prior to the event、手術之前就可以說prior to the surgery。
例句 1. Boarding will begin an hour prior to departure.在起飛前一小時會登機。
例句2. You can engage with your audience prior to the event. 活動前可以讓觀眾融入。
(二) before 在…之前
使用before 可作為介系詞，也可以用做連接詞。當作介系詞和連接詞有什麼不同呢？如果before作為介系詞，那麼後面可以直接加名詞就好。例如：before meals 用餐前。而作為連接詞，後面才可以加完整的句子，需要有主詞和動詞，請看下面的例句。
例句1. You should always wash your hands with soap before meals. 餐前你應該要用肥皂洗手。 例句2. You must wash fruits and vegetables before you eat them. 吃蔬菜水果前一定要先洗。
(三) ahead of 在…之前
使用ahead of 可以用來表達實體上的在前面，例如: ahead of him 可以表示在他的前面，也可以用在時間上的在前面，就是在未來的意思，例如：ahead of her 在她前面。如果單單是這樣用ahead of 加人，其實看不出來要表達的意思是什麼？請看以下的例句，表較清楚。
例句1: They are several miles ahead of him. 他們在他前面幾英里的路上。
例句2: Angela has a lot of work ahead of her.安琪拉有很多工作在未來等著她。
例句3: I always finish my projects ahead of schedule. 我總是提前完成我的計畫。
 (四) in advance 預先 /beforehand 在某事之前
使用in advance在句尾，作為時間副詞，表示預先去做某事的概念。功能在某些時候跟beforehand（在某事發生前）的概念可以互換，但是有些時候又不盡相同。請看以下例句。
例句1: If you can’t come to the meeting, let me know in advance. 如果你不能來開會讓我事先知道。(預先告知)
例句2. When you give a talk in public, it’s natural to feel anxious beforehand. 當你公開演講時你會局的焦慮。（這裡不會用in advance）
3.  Many thanks, in advance, for your help. 先謝謝你的幫忙。（這裡不用會beforehand）
