Sigung Stephen Labounty, arguably one of the most widely known Kenpoists, embodied the true essence of the "Warrior Spirit." His impact on the martial arts community is immeasurable. Now, I'll hand it over to Sifu Gary Swan to guide us through an exploration of Sigung Labounty's life and legacy.
Thank you, Peter. Ladies and gentlemen, it's a privilege to be here today to share in the remembrance of a remarkable individual. Sigung Stephen Labounty's journey in martial arts began with a foundation in Judo, and under the Tracy Brothers in 1962, he earned his Black Belt, only the third in their lineage. His path led him to become a National and International Champion, and he carried Mr. Ed Parker's banner with pride wherever he went.
Beyond the accolades, Sigung Labounty spent over two decades in Law Enforcement, leaving an indelible mark not just as a martial artist but as a protector of the community. His legendary "fighting/coaching drills" on the seminar circuit became a testament to his commitment to the art and the development of those under his guidance. A mentor, a friend, and a true martial arts icon, Sigung Labounty's influence extended far beyond the dojo.
As we reflect on his life today, we'll explore the profound impact he had on the Kenpo family, his role as a founding member of the American Kenpo Senior Council, and the significance of his title, "Sigung," which holds a special meaning, akin to that of a "Grandfather" in the Chinese tradition.
Today, we remember Sigung Stephen Labounty, not just as a martial artist, but as a man whose legacy continues to resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Join us as we delve into the rich tapestry of his life, with stories, reflections, and insights that capture the essence of this extraordinary Grandmaster.
For those listeners that are unaware Sigung Stephen Labounty was the principal motivation for the inception of the MInd Sensei Podcast and how it actually got started.
