Welcome to Episode 30 of The Afghanistan Project Podcast,
where hosts Mikael Cook and Beth Bailey highlight the struggles of Afghans living under Taliban rule, and the efforts of individuals from a variety of backgrounds and political affiliations who have stepped up to provide support to the people of Afghanistan in the chaos that followed the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Our guest, Patrick Wargo, joined the contractor workforce in
Afghanistan after serving in the Navy. After starting in a private security role, Patrick eventually pivoted and began teaching English to Afghan National Army Special Operations Command personnel. Patrick witnessed many of the final months of retrograde operations, and left Afghanistan himself in June 2021. He has continued to support Afghan refugees and special immigrant visa applicants in the years since the withdrawal.
Today’s episode concludes with a story from a young Afghan teen
who has had to relocate to a different province after the Taliban attempted to force her into marriage to a 70-year-old man. She tells us that her parents and younger brother have been arrested, and will not be released until she returns and complies with the illegal marriage.
