Secret Feminist Agenda

Episode 3.29 Feminist Anecdotes

Listen Later

It’s the last minisode of season three, and I’m doing some very specific responding to Anna Poletti’s peer review of season two. Specifically, I’m taking up the genre of the anecdote, and the kind of work it does in Secret Feminist Agenda. I’m thinking about anecdotes as teaching tools and as central to feminist knowledge production, and I’m shouting out some of the writers who model the radical potential of the anecdote. Plus Kaarina is talking to us about self care during conference season. Here are some links!

  • First off, I cite one particular scholarly article about anecdotes quite extensively in this episode: Melissa Greg’s “A Mundane Voice”. If you’d like to read it and don’t have institutional access, let me know.
  • My thinking about first-person or confessional writing as a mode of feminist knowledge work was inspired by a few Twitter threads as well as this old-but-still-pertinent Guardian piece on confessional writing.
  • And finally, here’s the (totally incomplete) list of great first-person-essay writers that I mentioned, including links to some of my favourite pieces they’ve written: Gwen Benaway, Tressie McMillan-Cottom, Samantha Irby, Erin Wunker, Alicia Elliott, Sara Ahmed, Briallen Hopper, Roxane Gay, and Jia Tolentino.
