Welcome to the Mind Sensei Podcast with your host, Peter Tas. Today, we have an extraordinary episode lined up for you, featuring a truly remarkable guest, 10th Degree Senior Master Mike Pick. This is the first of a special three-part series where we delve deep into the life, achievements, and wisdom of a martial arts legend.
Mr. Pick's journey began as a young boy in 1957 when he stumbled upon Ed Parker's Kenpo Karate Studio in Pasadena, California. At just ten years old, driven by a need for self-defense, he began his training under the guidance of Senior Grandmaster Edmund K. Parker, the founder of American Kenpo. What started as a quest for survival transformed into a lifelong dedication to martial arts.
Mr. Pick's commitment to Kenpo is unparalleled. On his sixteenth birthday, he stood in a horse stance for sixteen hours, symbolizing his unwavering dedication. His journey continued even as he served as an infantryman in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. For his bravery, he received numerous commendations, including the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
After returning from Vietnam, Mr. Pick resumed his training with Mr. Parker and played a significant role in the Kenpo community. He became Mr. Parker's "ambassador," dealing with grievances and fostering unity. His passion for Kenpo extended beyond martial arts as he pursued blacksmithing and horseshoeing, earning accolades such as the California Employment Development Department's "Teacher of the Year" and "Outstanding Veteran Employer of the Year."
In the early 1990s, Mr. Pick founded the Universal Kenpo Federation, marking a new chapter in his illustrious career. His dedication to the martial science of Kenpo and his innovative approaches have left an indelible mark on the world of martial arts.
