The Afghanistan Project Podcast

Episode 45 - Trevor Beaman

Listen Later

Welcome to Episode 45 of The Afghanistan Project Podcast, where hosts Beth Bailey and Mikael Cook highlight the struggles of Afghans living under Taliban rule, and the efforts of individuals from a variety of backgrounds and political affiliations who have stepped up to provide support to the people of Afghanistan in the chaos that followed the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Today’s special guest host, Will Selber, is a recently retired Air Force Lt. Col. who has appeared in prior episodes to discuss the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, and moral injury.

Today’s guest, Trevor Beaman, is an active-duty Master

Sergeant Green Beret currently working with 7th Special Forces Group. We discuss his four tours in Afghanistan, starting in 2004, and the changes and diversity of effort he witnessed in the country during the period he spent coming into and out of Afghanistan. We delve into a lot of the deep topics that were central to the U.S. effort in Afghanistan: how the military effort spilled over into nation building to the detriment of troops, how the deployment cycle led to inflated ideas about the effect of U.S. efforts, and how unsustainable many of our efforts in Afghanistan became.

Trevor also shares some new insights near the end of the

episode about what led to certain choices during the U.S. withdrawal, including the departure from Bagram Airfield.

Throughout this episode, Trevor notes the importance of

recalling all who gave their lives during our 20-year effort in Afghanistan. We here at TAPP concur wholeheartedly.
