It is not clear when the first account of the “Ningen” was reported. Some sources cite the first reported eyewitness of the creatures as taking place in the 1990s, while others claim that the Ningen was first documented all the way back in the late 1950s. While origins are murky, what is not murky is when the creature rose to popularity. In 2002, a post went viral on popular Japanese message board “2Channel” when a user known only as “Part-Timer” posted about her friend’s eye witness account of a white, blubbery, giant humanoid that emerged from the oceans near Antarctica.
