Welcome to “Episode 209: The Red Ghost”. In Eagle Rock, Arizona 1883, a woman was trampled to death by what was described as a hoofed beast with red hair being ridden by a devilish skeleton cowboy. Decades passed, and more sightings of the fearsome specter were observed throughout Arizona. Some claimed the creature flew, others claimed it trampled all who stood in its way, and still others thought it might be the Devil himself or one of his horsemen, but when the mystery was finally solved in the 1890s, the truth would prove to be stranger than fiction. At the forefront of the Norwegian black metal scene was a band known as Mayhem which became famous for their rebellious demonic sound and live displays of violence and gore, until the corpse Mayhem’s singer was discovered in 1991. As relics of cranium pieces, talk of cannibalism, and death photos became commonplace within the black metal scene, the public began to wonder whether the evil was just a gimmick or if something darker lingered within the lyrics.
