  • Interview with Dr Tamsin Furtado
In today’s podcast we talk to Dr Tamzin Furtado, Post Doctorate Research at Liverpool University.
Tamzin has conducted a variety of research studies throughout her career including Managing Equine Obesity, Equine wellbeing on livery yards and her most recent paper on the use of alternative grazing systems in the UK.
    We discuss:
What is the best way to manage obesity in our equines?
How we have become conditioned to seeing overweight horses and dogs as the norm.
We delve into the reality of being a livery yard manager and what a difficult job this can be. Becky shares a story about a livery yard and has her perspective changed after listening to Tamzin.
We also touch on human behaviour change, is there a bright future and how a multi-disciplined approach is needed to affect this change.
We look to the future and chat about sustainability and horse care and how in an ever changing climate we need to seek out new ways of manging our land.
As always there’s an interruption from an animal, a few tangents and Tamzin also “out – analogies” Becky (for our regular listeners you’ll know this is rare!!)
We could have chatted to Tamzin for hours about all the incredible work she has done and her findings but parent duties put a stop to that. We are very much looking forward to having Tamzin with us again to discuss her future projects.

  • Chat with Kate Thornton from IEP

In this episode we get to talk to the lovely Kate Thornton all about the IEP

IEP stands for: International Equine Professionals & they are leading the way in Equine Welfare

ICAN stands for: ICAN: International Companion Animal Network: putting welfare first for our companion animals

As independent animal therapists of many modalities it is important that the animals that we treat & work with have their welfare needs met & that we are all striving to improve their quality of life

That we as individuals continue to learn, evolve & share our knowledge to better understand the needs of the animals we are working with & those that are in our own care.

In this podcast we discuss anthropomorphism, labelling and recognising emotions. How can we help other professionals bring in better welfare practices in the face of adversity, do we need to take into consideration different motivators? Of course lots of tangents and rabbit holes, a few forgotten words (Kate was not on her A Game) and much much more.
