  • Get the Click?
In this episode we discuss the training groups that we are involved with at the moment and how good they are at focusing specific behaviour. Becky shares a top tip from Trudi that she has practiced with Rum, identifying if Rum recognises the click as the marker…and can Rum wait for the food to come to him. We touch on shaping plans and what an important aspect of our training they are. If you are enjoying our podcasts, please subscribe, like and share. • Aghhh the joys of Social Media
In this podcast we talk about social media and sharing videos and pictures of our work. Kate finds social media tricky, while Becky looks at it as an opportunity to raise animal health and welfare. Sharing to the world can be daunting and scary but it can also be fun, supportive and a chance to learn and grow from each other. Love it or hate it, social media is here to stay so if we can, let’s embrace it and help brighten people’s days and raise the profile of animal matters. • Is your horse really sleeping?
In this episode we explore the importance of sleep for our horses. This is a topic Kate has been keen to cover for some time, and she has been spurred on by a recent webinar hosted by EBTA on Equine Sleep Deprivation with Dr Joe Bertone. Kate and Becky booked tickets for the webinar but had to play catch-up due to family stuff. We cover a lot of ground in this episode and record it in the evening with wine so you can hear Becky get increasingly fuzzy with her thoughts. • For the love of foraging
Kate discusses her recent foraging and making sessions and how foraging helps her feel relaxed, we look at the reasons why. Coming to the end of Summer in the UK we don’t go into much detail about Summer herbs but touch on some commonly found in the Autumn and how we can offer to our horses. The fabulous reference books Becky uses are: Animal Botanicals Seasonal Herbs by the super Rachael Maxwell and Jo Rose, and Hedgerow Medicine by Julie Briton-Seal and Matthew Seal. • Shout out to Science
We are back! Season 4 kicks off with Becky standing corrected and giving a shout out to Science. We discuss Shaping plans and training with them, why they are useful and why is it that some of us find them tricky. A very quick book review of the fantastic read “Canine Enrichment for the real world” by Allie Bender and Emily Strong, so much in the book could be related to our horses. • The case of the Toy Poodle
In today’s podcast we discuss using positive reinforcement versus positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement combined. Kate talks about a study by Nicole A. Murray where she looked at The effects of combining positive and negative reinforcement during training with her dog. Becky struggles with scientific studies and the ethics and reasoning behind the need for humans to know everything, so we have a little rant. However we explore the study and compare the positive reinforcement and positive and negative reinforcement within our equine world and how we as care givers need to be aware and look at how we are teaching, training and learning with our horses. The end of season 3 and time for a little holiday, we will be back soon. If you are enjoying our podcast please share and subscribe. • Steiner School for Horses
In today’s podcast we discuss our training sessions with Rum, working with other trainers and taking tips and learning from each other. Looking at setting up training sessions, how long they should be and when to walk away. We chat about latent learning and the processing of information....filling the slots and enabling the horse to consolidate the training and this leads us to the thought of a Steiner School for Horses, how wonderful would that be! We hope you enjoy our ramblings today. If you are enjoying our podcast please share, like and subscribe. • Talking Saddles with Heather Moffett
In this weeks podcast we interview the fabulous Heather Moffett. Heather began riding as a child and being inquisitive she started to question methods.... by her teens she was riding and teaching using a method she adapted focusing on synchronicity with the horse. Heather has written several books, teaches and trains and has her own school: Enlightened Equitation. Heather has her own range of saddles and accessories, and this was our main point of discussion. Heathers saddles are renowned for their comfort and for helping the rider create the correct seat so to compliment the horse. If you are enjoying our podcast please share, like and subscribe. • Transitioning to Clicker Training (+r)
Over the last few weeks, we have met several people just starting or getting interested in clicker training with their horses. It can be daunting leaving the world we thought we knew behind, changing how we train, process and getting to grips with learning something new to us, then how do we translate that to our animals? A chilled energy vibe today as we recorded in the sunshine with the ponies snoozing alongside us. If you are enjoying our podcast please share, like and subscribe. • Hide and Seek/Recall: Search & Rescue
Equine Search and Rescue is a thing.... Kate has been inspired by this training as we have been playing Hide & Seek with Rum. Because the horse can access fast and different terrain, follow a scent and the ability to detect movement far away it makes them perfect for the job. Yet again we are in awe of how amazing horses are. So what does that mean for us? Well Hide and Seek is a great recall game, it’s similar to A2B but with a different slant as the horse has to find the human. We have been playing this game with Rum, hiding in different places and in different areas and we will progress with this. Why bother to play Hide and Seek? Why not? Its great fun and you really engage the seeking system in the horse, recall is always an advantage and if you ever needed your horse to find you..... viola the training is already there.
