Chapter 68
Afterwalking a half hour, he came to a small countrycalled the Land of the BusyBees. The streets were filledwith people running to and fro about their tasks.Everyoneworked, everyone had something to do. Even if one wereto search with alantern, not one idle man or one trampcould have been found.
"Iunderstand," said Pinocchio at once wearily,"this is no place for me!I was not born for work."But in the meantime, he began to feel hungry, foritwas twenty-four hours since he had eaten.
Whatwas to be done?
Therewere only two means left to him in order to get abite to eat. He had either towork or to beg.
Hewas ashamed to beg, because his father had alwayspreached to him that beggingshould be done only by thesick or the old. He had said that the real poor inthis world, deserving of our pity and help, were only those who, eitherthroughage or sickness, had lost the means of earning theirbread with their own hands. All others should work, andif they didn't, and went hungry, so much the worsefor them.
Justthen a man passed by, worn out and wet with perspiration, pulling, withdifficulty, two heavy carts filled with coal.
Pinocchiolooked at him and, judging him by his looksto be a kind man, said to him witheyes downcast in shame:
"Willyou be so good as to give me a penny, for I am faint with hunger?""Notonly one penny," answered the Coal Man. "I'll giveyou four if youwill help me pull these two wagons7.""I amsurprised!" answered the Marionette, very much offended.
"Iwish you to know that I never have been a donkey, nor have I ever pulled a wagon6.""So much thebetter for you!" answered the Coal Man.

Chapter 67
Butwhom shall I ask? There is no one here."The idea of finding himself in solonesome a spot made himso sad that he was about to cry, but just then he saw abigFish swimming near-by, with his head far out of the water.
Notknowing what to call him, the Marionette said to him:
"Heythere, Mr. Fish, may I have a word with you?""Even two, if youwant," answered the fish, who happened to be a very polite Dolphin.
"Willyou please tell me if, on this island, there areplaces where one may eatwithout necessarily being eaten?""Surely, there are," answeredthe Dolphin. "In factyou'll find one not far from thisspot.""And how shall I get there?""Take that path on yourleft and follow your nose. Youcan't go wrong.""Tell me another thing. You who travel day and nightthrough the sea, did you not perhaps meet a littleboat withmy father in it?""And who is you father?""He isthe best father in the world, even as I am theworst son that can befound.""In the storm of last night," answered the Dolphin,"thelittle boat must have been swamped.""And myfather?""By this time, he must have been swallowed by theTerrible Shark, which, for the last few days, has beenbringing terror to thesewaters.""Is this Shark very big?" asked Pinocchio, whowasbeginning to tremble with fright.
"Ishe big?" replied the Dolphin. "Just to give you an ideaof his size, let me tell you that he is larger than a fivestory building and that he has amouth so big and so deep, that a whole train and engine could easily get intoit.""Mother mine!" cried the Marionette, scared todeath;and dressing5 himself as fast as hecould, he turned to theDolphin and said:
"Farewell,Mr. Fish. Pardon the bother, and many thanksfor your kindness."This said,he took the path at so swift a gait that heseemed to fly, and at every smallsound he heard,he turned in fear to see whether the Terrible Shark, five storieshigh and with a train in his mouth, was following him.

"It's my father! It's my father!“Meanwhile, the little boat, tossed14 about by the angry waters, appeared and disappeared in the waves. And Pinocchio, standing on a high rock, tired out with searching, waved to himwith hand and cap and even with his nose.
It looked as if Geppetto, though far awayfrom the shore, recognized his son, for he took off his cap and waved also. Heseemed to be trying to make everyone understand that he would come back if hewere able, but the sea was so heavy that he could do nothing with his oars15.
Suddenly a huge wave came and the boatdisappeared.
They waited and waited for it, but it wasgone.
"Poor man!" said the fisherfolk on the shore, whispering prayer as they turned to go home.
Just then a desperate cry was heard.Turning around, the fisher folk saw Pinocchio dive into the sea and heard himcry out:
"I'll save him! I'll save my father!“The Marionette, being made of wood, floated easily along and swam like a fishin the rough water. Now and again he disappeared only to reappear once more. Ina twinkling, he was far away from land. At last he was completely lost to view.
"Poor boy!" cried the fisherfolk on the shore, and again they mumbled16 a few prayers, as they returned home.

The next morning, they were at theseashore.
Pinocchio jumped off the Pigeon's back, and the Pigeon, not wanting any thanks for a kind deed, flew away swiftly anddisappeared.

The water is very rough and we're afraid he will be drowned.“Where is the little boat? “There.

"More than fifty miles. “Fiftymiles? Oh, dear Pigeon, how I wish I had your wings! “If you want to come, I'lltake you with me.""How?""Astride my back. Are you very heavy?“Heavy? Not at all. I'm only a feather. “Very well. “Saying nothing more,Pinocchio jumped on the Pigeon’s back and, as he settled himself, he cried outgayly:
"Gallop10 on, gallop on, my pretty steed! I'm in a great hurry. “The Pigeonflew away, and in a few minutes, he had reached the clouds. The Marionettelooked to see what was below them. His head swam and he was so frightened thathe clutched11 wildly at the Pigeon's neck to keep himself from falling.

Why did I not die, who am so bad, insteadof you, who are so good? And my father--where can he be? Please dear Fairy, tell me where he is and I shall never, never leave him again! You are not dead, are you? If you love me, you will come back, alive as before. Don't you feelsorry for me? I'm so lonely. If the two Assassins come, they’ll hang me againfrom the giant oak tree and I will really die, this time. What shall I do alonein the world?
Now that you are dead and my father islost, where shall I eat? Where shall I sleep? Who will make my new clothes? Oh,I want to die! Yes, I want to die! Oh, oh, oh! “Poor Pinocchio! He even triedto tear his hair, but as it was only painted on his wooden head, he could noteven pull it.
Just then a large Pigeon flew far abovehim. Seeing the Marionette, he cried to him:
"Tell me, little boy, what are youdoing there? “Can’t you see? I'm crying," cried Pinocchio, lifting his headtoward the voice and rubbing his eyes with his sleeve.
"Tell me," asked the Pigeon,"do you by chance know of a Marionette, Pinocchio by name? “Pinocchio! Didyou say Pinocchio?" replied the Marionette, jumping to his feet."Why, I am Pinocchio! “At this answer, the Pigeon flew swiftly down to theearth.
He was much larger than a turkey.

Chapter61
Pinocchio weeps uponlearning that the Lovely Maiden with Azure1 Hair is dead. He meets a Pigeon, who carries him to the seashore. He throws himself into the sea to go to the aid of his father As soon asPinocchio no longer felt the shameful2 weight of the dog collar around his neck, he started to run acrossthe fields and meadows3, andnever stopped till he came to the main road that was to take him to the Fairy'shouse.
When he reached it, he looked into thevalley far below him and there he saw the wood where unluckily he had met theFox and the Cat, and the tall oak4 tree where he had been hanged; but though he searched far andnear, he could not see the house where the Fairy with the azure Hair lived.
He became terribly frightened and, running as fast as he could, he finally came to the spot where it had oncestood.
The little house was no longer there. Inits place lay a small marble slab5,which bore this sad inscription6:
HERE LIES THE LOVELY FAIRY WITH AZUREHAIR WHO DIED OF GRIEF WHEN ABANDONED BY HER LITTLE BROTHER PINOCCHIO The poor Marionette7 was heartbroken at reading these words. He fell to the ground and, covering the cold marble with kisses, burst into bitter tears. He cried allnight, and dawn found him still there, though his tears had dried and onlyhard, dry sobs8 shook his wooden frame. But these were so loud that they could beheard by the far away hills.

What is the use of accusinghim?
The dead are gone and they cannot defendthemselves.
The best thing to do is to leave them in peace!“Were you awake or asleep when they came?" continued the Farmer.
"I was asleep," answeredPinocchio, "but they awakened me with their whisperings. One of them even cameto the door of the doghouse and said to me, `If you promise not to bark, wewill make you a present of one of the chickens for your breakfast.' Did youhear that? They had the audacity5 to make such a proposition as that to me!
For you must know that, though I am avery wicked Marionette full of faults, still I never have been, nor ever shallbe, bribed6.""Fineboy!" cried the Farmer, slapping him on the shoulder in a friendly way."You ought to be proud of yourself.
