Erica Katz & 'FAKE': Complicated Conversations Series

Listen Later

We are so excited to be chatting (again) with Erica Katz to discuss her second novel, FAKE.
** Complicated Woman: Emma. Erica tells us about her development of Emma, a woman with a secret and a past she'd like to forget who is struggling to figure out life in the art world. (03:27)
** Erica shares how a passage from Fake that we love –  “Life is complicated. That’s why we have art. To help us make sense of it” – was actually written following our prior conversation with her! We died upon hearing that. (05:19)
** As lawyers we were familiar with the BigLaw setting of The Boys Club, but we were fascinated by the art world and what research Erica did to make us feel immersed in it for Fake. (08:28)
** Fake may not be set in a law firm, but it is still structured around deposition transcript excerpts. Erica explains why this is one aspect of her writing that is here to stay. (12:10)
** “Emma Caan is a fake.” We discuss this line from the novel, but more generally the exploration of perception vs reality. (14:12)
** In her acknowledgements for Fake, Erica wrote: "To everybody who reached out to say they saw bits of their own lives in The Boys’ Club—I wrote this for you." We loved hearing what Erica meant by this — doubters, listen up! (18:47)
** Writing a sophomore novel isn’t easy! Erica shares how her writing process and expectations  have changed for her second novel. (22:48)
** Erica tells us her favorite thing about writing and her favorite thing about being an author. (25:25)
** In our last interview we learned Erica is a Gemini. The company Emma works for in Fake is called Gemini. Coincidence? (30:35)
** Erica discusses the exciting news in her personal live… she recently got engaged! (32:56)
** Erica tells us what she’s loving right now in terms of books, movies and TV shows. (35:27)
** We get the scoop on book three! (39:51)
