Erotic Devotion (formerly home-body podcast)

Traditional beeswax candlemaker, Alysia Mazzella, talks with us about how honeybees collaborate, the importance of local economies and knowing where your honey (and your candles!) come from.  We share about using candles as a way to mark sacred time and what bees can teach us about what sustainable work looks like.

we discuss

• Candle making as a vehicle for sacred time and being close to nature
• A historical narrative on human relating with bees and honey
• How bees model working relationships for social sustainability
• Finding ethical, respectful, reciprocal ways of working with nature
• How bees teach her how to run her business and work with others
• Why local economy + purchasing from people you know is important for sustainability
• The benefits of beeswax candles
•  Why most store-bought candles are bad for your health + the environment
• Why buying soy candles is supporting climate change
• Alysia’s personal practices with candles to hold ritual
• The special spectrum of light from beeswax candles + how it interacts with our bodies

"Business is one of the most radical courses in self-development."

today, Johanna Renoth + Mary Grace  talk about Instagram — how they are (or aren't) using it in life + business and some of the  "rules" they've broken around how to do business.

Johanna is an executive + business coach,  and her work supports entrepreneurs and leaders in charting their own path and finding success on their own terms. She is also writing her Ph.D on Instagram.

In this episode we talk about :

• The myth of work-life balance and focusing, instead, on being a full human
•  Her Ph.D work on Instagram looking at the intersection of political + visual theory
•  Thinking about what happens to us when we interact as a brand instead of a human
• Our personal pros + cons engaging with Instagram for business
• How we can re-think our approach to dialogue, compromise + solutions
• The Instagram algorithm + our emotional weather
• How aesthetics give us clues as to what is deemed appropriate + good in a society or culture
• How to evaluate whose internet advice to take

Guest conversation today with Alice Sparkly Kat.  Ace approaches astrology as an intersectional + political practice, and they want to widen our star thinking so we can build new relationships with astrology, one another + ourselves. Their new book Postcolonial Astrology, serves as a history and toolkit, decoding the planets from a postcolonial perspective, and it's now available for purchase.

We discuss —
* how Western astrology is not universal
* intersecting postcolonial thoughts + critical race theory with astrology
* the tension between imagining post-colonialism and creating a false utopia
* Saturn + power dynamics
* magic in our mundane tasks + experiences
* Queer fluidity as its own yearning
* the kinds of stories and epiphanies that show up in sessions with others
* how we mythologize gender
* the idea of Asia + the beginning of the industrial complex
