Barry Lee is an Illustrator, Muralist & Storyteller based in Atlanta, Georgia. His work is very color and whimsical and the images are vehicles for meaningful stories that encourage a moment of mindfulness and extended awareness. In this episode, Barry talks about whose imagination is making this moment possible for him, making holistic approaches more accessible and less able-ist, and he shares the story about the moment when he stepped into his own and really claimed his identity as a queer disabled person and realized he had to become the representation he wanted to see. Barry also shares about the relationship between boundaries and vulnerability and why it’s important to reflect upon our own behavior more so than it is to judge other people’s behavior. 

WE DISCUSS/

• Whose imagination is making this moment possible for him
• How his work centers the message of accessibility with a “spoonful of sugar”
• Why it’s important to take the time to understand people’s work and the context 
• How his approach to social media has adjusted
• Making holistic concepts more accessible
• How his process is rooted in intuition + meditation
• How media has taught us to pity, fear and misunderstand disability
• Why the representation we consume and create matters
• The story and show that helped him step into his own and take up space as the representation he wanted to see
